hey guys, I'm just wondering, when buying a new set of headphones, which song do you guys play to test headphones? And how do you tell if it's 'really' good or just good?

 "Imperial March" played by the fort worth symphony orchestra. I tested a pair of headphones in high school with the song and it just stuck

oh and if you are in the market, the best cost effective headphones I have ever had are the Panasonic RP HTX7. the newer ones are made in China but honestly sound just as good.
you should give them a shot.

I would say anything off Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". 8)

But more preferably, the song "Us And Them" so you can relax, chill, and let your body float away into another dimension! (illegal substance not required!)

+1

I love my TDKs. Whenever I A/B headphones the TDKs win every time but I haven't A/Bed many good ones.

That's another good one, a masterpiece of audio engineering.

I agree with Nick. Sennheiser all the way. Actually last headphones that I bought are Sennheiser/Adidas that I use when I go out biking.

When trying out headphones,I use the same method I use when trying out speakers and that's by putting on a rousing piece of orchestral music such as Beethoven's 5th, Rimsky-Korsakov's "Sheherazade" or just about anything by Tchaikovsky.I find that these works cover most of the sound frequencies,so if your headphones can handle them at a higher than normal volume they should be suitable for just about any kind of music.

telegraph road- dire straits because of the legnth and the frequency range of the song. there is hard rock and soft almost ballads style with alot of non instrumental sounds.

Have to say I came here to post "DARK SIDE" by Pink Floyd but see I was beaten to it.

The problem with headphones is that most color the sound so much and they all sound so different. Even different models from the same maker sound way different. The open air headphones (the ones with foam earpieces) usually are flatter sounding and that is not what most people want. I like the Koss Pro4AA pair for short term listening. They sound awesome but require a fair amount of power to push. Wearing them for a long time is an issue though.

Really good headphones are hard to find and really expensive. The SONY's sound pretty good for the money. I have Koss, Sennheiser and Sony. They all sound completely different and each is useful for different applications. For comfort the Sennheisers win. Best bass Sony wins. Best isolation and all around high fidelity goes to the Koss Pro4AA pair. I've also owned Pickering, Stanton, Fostex and others. But I kept the Sony, Koss and Sennheiser cans.

It took a couple of years to break in my Sony wireless headphones.

I read a post about that while shopping out headphones for home use.

Had I selected them based on my first impressions, I'd have declined them.

I'm thoroughly stoked I got the Sony's -- they broke in phenomenally for a wireless headphone and they've lasted many years. Based on how thoroughly they've been wrangled with, I wouldn't be surprised if they held up well on the road!

If you're serious about headphones, you'll do a lot of homework before purchasing them, there's a bunch of options out there.

If I were to pick one song...hmmmm...Satch, Flyin' in a Blue Dream.
