Hi all, I am going through an old songbook and am dissecting various keys in different chord voicings. But really just experimenting with new progressions and having fun with them.

I've come across "Colour My World" by Chicago. In my book the chord progression is as follows:

Key of F:

F /// Am // / Bb /// Eb /// Ab // / Gb // / D7 // / Gmaj7 /// Eb7 // / C7 /// / / // F / Bb C7 F / /

-The underlined part is definitely not in the key of F. Would it take over in the key of Eb?
I ask because the D7 on paper seems a little funny. That would be either a dominant7 chord on the 6th of F or the 7th of Eb. Or is this some kind of substitution?

-Also, the next song in the book is also in the Key of F, as indicated by the single flat on the staff. But it throws in a Eb chord! Why is this?

Thanks to anyone who can offer a bit of insight. I am trying to improve at looking at music analytically.

Hi Toronado: short answer - dunno.

However, I didn't know this number before and after a quick Youtube I like it and want to learn it. If nothing else, for the stretches:

E - 1
B - 3
G - 3
D - 5
A - x
E - x

Ouch.

In the lesson Arjay's linked to Neil Hogan is suggesting an easier way to play that, with a pull-off. But instead I'm thinking what about

E - x
B - 6
G - 7
D - 8
A - 10
E - x

Even my little hands can manage that one.

None of that's what you're asking, but it's the sort of thing I find fun. I'll work at it some more and maybe come back to you on the other stuff. Meantime, what book are you using, please? Sure I can find it for myself, but a heads-up wouldn't hurt.

Anyhow. Thanks for making me pay attention to this number.

Cheers - C

Thank you Arjay, I checked out the video and it was indeed of some help. I do wish people wouldn't post Youtube videos to advertise their websites, though. :?

Hi Ceri:
I've done a some CSI work and here's what I've got so far.

That Gm7 chord you posted is a really nice voicing - I'll remember that one! In the book I have they make life easy by playing the third chord as Bb(A#) major, by chopping that annoying G note on the fifth fret:

E - 1
B - 3
G - 3
D - 0
A - x
E - x

A nice inversion, I find.

I've also solved the kerfuffle with regards to playing an Eb major chord in the key of F, with the a little help from the video:
Ebmaj7 shares three notes (A#, D, G) with Gmin7, which makes for an acceptable substitution.

Perhaps the other chords I've underlined are also substitutions of sorts in the key of F, but for now I'll just accept that it sounds good. :P

The next two chords in the book, Eb and Ab, sound really nice together:

Eb:

E - 3
B - 4
G - 3
D - 5
A - x
E - x

Ab:

E - 4
B - 4
G - 5
D - 6
A - x
E - x

Anyway, the book I have was printed in 1971! It's called "hansen's youth music of today - 50 Sensational Songs For Guitar". Half of the songs I haven't heard of so it's really refreshing to do some experimenting. And it's always fun to learn something new.

All the best
