My daughter is wanting an electric for her birthday in a few weeks. I don't want to give her one of those Toys-R-Us specials that loses tune in 30 minutes, or has bad tone. Do you have any recommendations for a good "travel" size that she can grow with? By the way, she already plays some, so this isn't a lost investment.

it's hard to learn on a cheap guitar! my sister got a cheap Johnson for her first electric, and it was really aweful! she didn't like it and therefor didn't play it to much. Not that you need to spend thousands or anything, but I wouldn't go with anything super cheap and unenjoyable!

I say depending on how big she is either the squier mini or bullet are pretty good calls for beginers on a budget. I know a kid who started on the mini and I used the bullet when starting on electric.

I got my daughter one of the lil Fender Squier mini. Her's is black. She likes it because it looks likes dad's strats. :D
She is 9 but very very petite and has small hands. It's good for her for now. Depending on how big your child is would determine what size guitar to get. There are several decent quality acoustics and electrics on the market. She wanted that Fender though. Let your child try some out and go from there.

Check out a Mustang. The 24" scale and 7.25" radius might be good for her.

Thanks a lot. I found the squier mini and the bullet, and just need to go see them now to try to determine what way to go. She is small (8), and wants something other than black or red, which I can appreciate. I will have to kick around a bit. Thanks again and I appreciate the feedback.

Squier also makes Hello Kitty Minis in pink and black...

I would think that anything with a 24" scale would be good (Fender, why aren't you making Duo-Sonics anymore?) A Jaguar (used or import or both) might be an option. The key thing is, is what feels good and plays easily for her. Scale length is important if she has small hands and/or is still learning.

I got my 4 year old son a Les Paul Peewee. It really doesn't stay in tune well at all. Also when tuned to standard tuning, the strings are really loose. I might try some heavier strings and see if that helps. He has fun with it, but in no "plays" it. I think he just likes the noise it makes

is is easy to "bend" though :D
