So I have been deep in thought lately as to why we had a incredible run of great "guitar influenced" music from about ... say 1965 to 1985... (1985-1990 was that embarrasing run of hair band music)

I mean so much great guitar music came out and became part of our popular culture in this 30 year expanse of time...

Then, I think about how Nirvana came out at about 1990 and totally squashed the hair band culture.... What affect did this have on popular rock and roll ? Was there collateral damage..

Don't get me wrong, I love Nirvana's music.... And I don't blame the band or it's members at all .... And I still think we have some good guitairsts coming out these days... Good bands... But those bands don't seem to ever get popular and I just don't feel the same vibe from the music as I did for the bands/music from the 60's, 70', 80's

Maybe I'm just getting old and its normal to not develop taste for the new music coming out when you're 43 ??

Does this sound crazy ?? :(

I agree with this. Most of the music I've listened to (Guitar based, or not) has lost its flavor. Yes, there are still great bands, but it is a totally different feel from the old favorites.

modern music in general is on a decline. I used to listen to the local alternative station "The Edge" around here and now i cannot stand it. i am sick of hearing about pumped up kicks, and "people you used to know", I am glad to see some great legends come back to life! I mean a new rush album  things will be repaired!

Honestly though I really dislike these pictures though, it's very easy to take the best of one year and compare it to the worst of another.

Eg.

Rick Dees - Disco Duck - 1976

Try your luck, don't be a cluck, disco
Disco
Disco
Disco
Disco
Disco
Disco, disco duck
All right
Disco, disco duck
Ah, get down mama,
Oh mama, shake your tail feather, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha

The Gaslight Anthem - Here's Looking At You Kid - 2008

But boys will be boys and girls have those eyes
That will cut you to ribbons sometimes.
And all you can do is just wait by the moon
And bleed if it's what she says you oughta do.

So yeah.

ANYWAY to the topic at hand, I think the real reason guitar music isn't big like it used to be is that guitar music now for the most part is not a big part of what is now considered to be pop music.

I wouldn't say music is in decline, however the type of music that many older people tend to enjoy could be considered to be.

I disagree a little. music is definitely on a decline. I think it is mostly because anyone with little effort can create a repetitive beat with a computer. that is what everything is reverting to in mainstream music. but to compose a proper piece of music with an instrument is a challenge. most of today's youth is after the instant gratification. modern music is slowly losing its complexity and structure. in my opinion it coincides with the general intelligence of the population. technology is getting more advanced and children are getting dumber. just like that film Idocracy

Each to their own I guess. I don't subscribe to that train of thought myself, I honestly believe that yes the mainstream music isn't top quality at all, but there is still a wealth of music underneath of substance and great quality. The issue is that the mainstream radio stations and music companies are just pumping out as much "talent" show created bs into the public eye as possible and it makes things look so much worse than it actually is.

I love how this board always throws on the nostalgia goggles and pretends there wasn't godawful pop music getting churned out at sickening rates 40 years ago.

Doesn't every older generation complain about new music?

If you go back far enough, every respected music style was probably considered crap by someones Dad or Grampa at one point.

True that, the whole point of a teenager liking a certain music is because their parents hate it, it's not cool to like the same music as your parents, thats a fact!

Couldn't you just as easily say anyone could play generic pentatonic licks over a I IV I V progression? Or that anyone could tell three violists to play a shockingly boring diatonic cannon over a harpsichord bass line?(This,by the way, was the low point in musical history)

Anyone can do it, but that's not to say anyone can do it well.

Good point, I do sound like my father lol. But my wife being a teacher I hear all about how children are slowly rotting away. She has seen a steady decline over the past 20 years. But I agree allot of it is controlled by the media

I will agree with you ..... Funny there are two artists that are currently putting out new music that appeals to me (that come to mind)...

Alejandro Escovedo and Sue Foley... Both are 40+...

Someone needs to turn me on to the new music that may appeal to me...

Because NickelBack just ain't cuttin' it...
