Hi moochy: well, there's plenty of P90s built the same size as humbuckers. But I don't recall ever seeing a humbucker the size of a P90. A mini-humbucker would easily fit in the space left by a P90 in a pickguard but there would be a gap around the edges.

No reason it couldn't be done, and I know a company in our country that might possibly build such a pickup for you if you needed it:

http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/

Those people do lots of other custom type work, so maybe building a humbucker in a P90 casing would interest them. You could always ask.

Or someone could make a stacked P90, which would offer similar hum cancelling properties to a humbucker. Rather like a noiseless single-coil. Another possibility.

I sort of don't see it becoming standard kit though, in the way single-coil sized humbuckers are. I suspect there just isn't the demand. But I could be wrong.

Cheers - C

Gibson and Seymour Duncan used to make them, I don't know if they still do. DiMarzio still does though.

I thought the mini-buckers in the '68 goldtop Les Paul were P-90 sized...and too, the Firebird humbuckers, too (the original, not the Fireturd X). Isn't that correct? :?:

You might check out Pete Biltoft's creations, and give him a call. He makes a lot of niche-style pups, and I can heavily vouch for the quality and sound (I have a set of SP90's in my Stratocaster).
Here's his website:

Ha, is that right? Earlier I checked out the dimensions of Kent Armstrong's P90s and mini-humbuckers and there's a fair difference. But that don't have to apply to everything, I'm sure.

You're probably right...I've been wrong before (just ask Lady Armadillo).
I seem to recall an article saying the reissued Goldtops from the late 60's were leftover template from the 50's Goldtops, with Epiphone mini-buckers (from the Wilshire guitars)...but the article (or my memory) may be wrong.
I have a mind like a steel trap...rusted half-open, so nothing stays in or out.

Mind you, that all sounds highly possible, doesn't it? Interesting: need to look into that...

The Gibson mini-humbuckers with the Gibson mounting rings attached are the same size as the P-90s.

There you go, that may be where I got that idea.
