Just play your tele without having it connected to an amp. That will tell you if it's static build up or not. If you still get a shock without the guitar being connected to anything that is powered up, then it must be.

If you don't get any result after a week, try it with the Marshall. If it were me, I wouldn't be touching that Blackstar amp again until I'd got to the bottom of the problem.

A pain I know but it's not like you have to go and play Carnegie Hall or something.

I wish!

OK, the plan seems good. In a week, if nothing shows up with my tele, I will try it through the marshall. I'll do the same with my strat.

Thanks very much :D

Oh my, I just had another thought. You haven't been messing about with the valves in the Blackstar have you?

When trying to overhaul an old amp that I had no info on. I mistook the valve type and put a ECL86 into the power valve socket when it had to be an EL84. That gave me a bit of a tingle when I picked up the guitar cable that was plugged in. The ECL86 is half power valve half preamp valve. Putting an EL84 in I'd connected the guitar cable to the heater circuit.
If you've had the preamp valve out and got the pin placement wrong when you put it back in, that could possibly do the same.

I did touch the various metal parts of my strat for the test. There is a hum with both the guitars, although usually there is more hum with the strat because of the single coil pickups, but now the tele is slightly louder.

Tele have also single coils unless you have not the "standard " one

I have been doing some research, and apparently the fact that the hum went away when I touched the metal parts of the guitar shows that perhaps the grounding on the guitar is fine.

Wrong , this mean guitar have a ground problem. In this case your body ARE the ground for the guitar . That is why hum went away.

Is it a good idea to try playing both guitars through a different amp-I also have a marshall mg15 that I got when I started. Perhaps that would help me determine what the problem is?

Very good idea , do this test. You should do that before.

So what about when you have rubber soled shoes on and the noise still goes away?

It's not that way at all. The ground in the guitar grounds your bodies natural electrical noise and stops it interfering with the pickups.

Thats why shielding a body cavity has some effect on a guitars noise. It stops your body 'noise', which is behind the shielding getting to the pickups. So you only have all the other external noise to deal with. From lights and tv sets.
