Rumors is still one of my favorite all time classics. I gotta go with The Lindsey era. That album just brings up too many great memories of my childhood. My whole family listened to Rumors every day for a long time.

There was a Fleetwood Mac after peter Green???
I'm With SA on this one.
When the individual who brings the heart and soul to a band moves on to other ventures the band takes on a new personality -
The Guess Who and BTO?
Airplane without Paul Kantner?
Genesis without Peter Gabriel?
(Dare I mention) Pink Floyd without Syd Barrett?
The Grandmothers (Mothers of Invention after Frank passed away... and recently Jimmy Carl Black).
Granted the bands had very successful careers (some more than [m]others) when the founders went away, but they weren't the same.

Frankie, you hit the nail on the head my friend. When Airplane changed to Starship, yow that was horrible. A lot of younger people don't even know who Syd Barrett was. Genesis? Never liked them anyway. I was more into Yes. The later Fleetwood Mac departed from the entire genre that the Peter Green era was based on.
Zappa? I'm glad his music lives on with his son, but I feel it lacks the sparkle and humor that Frank gave it. His music is more than just notes.

The only album worth buying was Rumours and half of that was Stevie Nicks mystical moonhippy, unicorn baiting rainbow nonsense. Tango had a couple of good tracks and Tusk was a disaster aside from the title track...

I concur completely. The music from Rumours was good, but the appointment of Stevie Nicks as a lyrical shamanic princess by many in her generation turned me off. Commercial success, absolutely. Critical acclaim? They went down hill as the success rolled in.

I like some (not all) music from many of the lineups that have gone through
the Mick & John band.

One of my favorites is still 'Mystery" :

I kind of liked the Lindsey Buckingham/Stevie Nicks era of Fleetwood Mac. They shot to superstardom and then some!

Peter Green was (still is) a hell of a blues guitarist and really make Fleetwood Mac a household name back in the day. But that era was good and all, but nowhere's near the success of the later years.

Fleetwood Mac and Rumours were both amazing albums that are still constantly played on the radio. I don't think you hear "Oh Well" or "Hypnotized" (Bob Welch era) that much on the radio these days.

Votes are creeping up for Lindsey's era 8) Don't think that he'll make up the ground but it's fun reading everyone's reasons for liking who they liked best.

Later era had better tunes, more memorable, whereas Pete's era was definitely more an out and out blues band, which was way cool also. I always thought Greeny was right up there alongside Eric in ability.

I've always wondered what Peter Green would have done had he not had his "breakdown" (whether it was bad acid, accumulated drug use or whatever).

His "End of the Game" disc hints at an extremely different direction from his earlier recordings. I own this disc, and its not an "easy listen." There's hints of brilliance there, but it almost seemed like a concerted effort to prove he was something different than the "Fleetwood Mac dude."

Unfortunately, I've never had opportunity to listen to his "In The Skies" album, which is more critically acclaimed, so I don't know where he was going from there.

But I wonder if he would have gone the way of Clapton, exploring rock, country, reggae and pop before returning to blues, or if he would have become more Gilmour-esque, with the massive orchestrations...

Either way, he (and the whole early Fleetwood Mac guitar contingency) are a cautionary tale, with the excesses of drugs and alcohol leading to ruined mental health, cult memberships and self-imposed exiles...it's sad.

I went for Peter Green era, great guitarist and singer don't forget, he could have fronted a band on vocals alone IMO, the later Mac for me was all mostly vocal harmonies orientated ( was The Chain an exeption ??) and good as they were Green still gets my vote

This is a great poll! Mr. Green all the way! I dug them as a rock/blues ala oldies with Jeremy Spencer ( When he was not religiously flipping out! ). All about big Orange amps and Les Pauls! FM went through many changes! Even though Peter started the group, it became Mick Fleetwood baby! I feel Mick is a great artist, musician and business guy. I suspect he is a nice person as well. I gathered this from reading a book he wrote about FM. I feel they ruled as a blues group, not a reasonable copy of a 60s San Francisco pop/rock act. Rumors was the last thing they did that I liked.

Greeny only used Orange for the first American tour. Because, rumour has it, he managed to convince Cliff Cooper to pay the haulage cost on the proviso that Greeny would buy the amp when he got back with some money. Must have been early days.

He didn't like the amp.

The Dustbins album was recorded through a JTM45. After the first US tour Green used either a Bandmaster or his old JTM45.

Early FM - Narrowly focused genre but done very well.

Buckingham / Nicks - More main stream. One exceptional album. Not much else.

From now on when I use the term "Oh Well" I'll put it in quotes.

:P

What actually happened to Peter that made him lose his mind? I saw a TV program that said he was in some Scandinavian country, or maybe it was Germany, i can't remember, and he was given some industrial strength LSD, he took it and he was never the same for all those years. IDK if that's the truth but that's what i heard. :?:

They were all using in the band. He had abused it quite a bit. He wrote some great stuff on the poop!
