non of the above
look on ebay for a late 70's- early 80's Jen wah

You'll pay half the cost of a new one for one made by the original manufacturers

Morley Mark Tremonti power wah. Great pedal with that "ahem!" liquid wah sound. It's got a button to boost power as well. Might be too heavy a sound for you though if you're not into hard rocking sounds. Good thing about is you don't need to do that annoying click at the start to get it on, as soon as you put your foot on it it's on 8)

I prefer the original Crybaby; I don't play metal, but I do play harder-edged blues stuff than you are playing at this point in your journey.

HOWEVER--the Vox is very cool--a bit smoother of a sound than the Crybaby...be sure that you get the Vox with the chrome top/foot surface, because the one with the painted top/foot surface is their version of the Crybaby.

You really need to go to a Guitar Center or Something and play as many as you can with the same guitar & amp setup, for comparison.

If you can't do that--For your taste and style, I think the chromed Vox would be best (and that's what I voted).

Hi Super Kid,the Cry Baby isn't metal oriented as you may think but with the newer type pedals the Vox would be my choice. If anything the Morley would be the pedal most suited to metal-at least the Power Wah is.Vox has always had the edge over Dunlop's Cry Baby but as Nik said if you can get your hands on an older JEN wah pedal you'd be getting a much better pedal than any of the others for much cheaper unless you were lucky enough to find a Vox Clyde McCoy pedal, which is the Holy Grail of pedals but unfortunately sells in the region of $1,000 these days.

Ok.. Well. I guess I'll be the first to vote for the Crybaby. But they're not suited for everyone. They need some modification to be where I like them. But once modded, I like the wide sweep range and sharp highs. It's very well suited for Reggae.

Vox wah's are cool too. They have a smooth delivery. The only Morley I ever had was an older Bad Horsie. It robbed my tone bigtime, and I believe they're not made to be modded. Not sure about nowadays, and I wouldn't have had the guts to do it in those days anyway. I just sold it instead.

It just depends. I don't use my Crebaby very often so it's fine. The Vox to my ears is more "vocal". The Wah effect gets old pretty quickly. It's probably one of the most over used effect there is.

I don't use a Wah much, but the one I use is a Teese Picture Wah which was
one of the first Teese pedals ever made :

I would highly suggest going to test drive some pedals vs just going off suggestions or online reviews.

One of the above, and yet none of the above. When I was about your age, I also wanted a Wah for my birthday. I told my Dad that I'd like an original Crybaby, but he messed up an got me the slightly more expensive Crybaby Classic instead. And I'm really glad he did!

Here's a comparison. I hope the link works, I'm on my phone right now.

I agree with Screamin' in the Vox V-847 is slightly better than the V-845. The first is better because it doesn't color your tone as much. The latter is a good starter wah, good for tapping but the other "gets out of your way" and is tonally superior. The Cry Baby, even though it's true by pass, has more of a crackly, distorted tone to it. Vox's are more cleaner sounding.

The Classic is a good one. This is the one I have:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9zfKxLX9Jk

It has a vocal sound similar to the classic, and it has a chrome top! Don't confuse it with the all black JH wah. That one is different than the one I have, but read reviews that it closer to JH sound.

Grasshopper, nicholsoni is correct. Ask your Dad to take you out and test drive a bunch of then in his price range. At least bring YOUR guitar for the test drive. We don't have your young ears. Ours are all old, beat up and frequency damaged.
