:?: Gentleman, I am looking to buy a nice fender guitar at a local guitar store. Be for I plunk down my hard earned money I felt the need to get advice from those much more knowledgeable than myself. I am looking at what I am told is a 91 strat that was a dealer promo. It's white with a all black neck and head stock . It has one pick up and volume control. It only says Stratocaster on the head stock. There is no traditional pick guard as I see on most fenders. It's in very good condition, no dings, chips or any scratches. and plays real sweet. There is no case to go with it. They are asking 1200. for it. Is this a reasonable price ?

The "all black necks" are usually from the "HM" (Heavy Metal) Strats, but those (MI and MIJ) were set up with the pickups (a bucker at the bridge), and Ithink the peghead decal read "STRAT" instead of "Stratocaster."

I can't find anything about this guitar.... maybe it's a mongrel, maybe it was some kind of weird dealer special.

Hi Bill, Last night I found what I think is the closest description. It might be a 87 contemporary "first version "
This one looks just like it , except the one I am looking at is white. Would you call this just more odd that a
slightly rare " pretentiously collectable ". Here is the sight : http://www.strat-central.com/japan.htm
Thank you very much for helping me research this guitar. Would you know if there were dealer sale's
insentive guitar's produced. I have some pictures that Randy ( the seller ) sent to me, but I don't know
how to get them off my mail on to the forum.

For $1200 you can buy a new American Standard Strat and get the case, warranty, and all the proper markings on the neck and elsewhere.

Hi Roadie, I have to agree, Yes you can ! Just like buying a new car the minuet you walk out the door your value drops rapidly. I feel that buying a older guitar in excellent condition it will have already bottomed out. If you are lucky and buy the right older guitar, it may hold it's value and keep pace with our ever inflating dollar. And if you are very lucky and pick one that may become a future collectable you may find that you made a good investment. There are no guarantee's there ether. That's not saying I want to get rich on my one guitar. Everyone looks at it from there own prospective. Thank you for your reply.

Hi Jim, Thank you for your response. Check the link I left in Bills Post.
I though it was a " HM " also.

Thats is what my strat looks like, off white with black neck and came with a humbucker at the bridge. Mine says made in Japan on the headstock, tho. $1,200 is a lot of dough for that guitar. Buy a new one, like the other posters said.

I think it is known as a "Sammy Hagar" model, but I am not sure. I took the stock humbucker and replaced it with a JB-4 and stuck 2 lace sensors in it. My favorite guitar, but I bought it for $100.00.

Unless he can provide a serial number, model name that you can verify and finc the value of , I'd pass. $1200 is way too much money for a guitar that has no known provenance.

Like JPD said, you can get a new Am. Std. or a used Am. Deluxe for that kinda money.

I'd be suspicious.

I am suspicious, that's why I am trying to do my homework first. If it turns out to be nothing I'll still have my money. If it turns out to be something good I could end up with very nice guitar. serial number is : A029093.
Again thank you so much for helping me narrow this down. Question ? did
fender ever make a dealer sales insentive guitar ? Is there any information anywhere on such a item ? I have been told that it was originally purchased at a guitar store in Maui, Hawaii . The picture looks identical to the one on Strat Central / japan. Except the body is a cream color. The head stock is identical. If it was made for the Japanese market there may lots of them over there and very few over here. That still does not mean that it has much value over here. Is there any info on production number's on guitars produced in Japan .
again , much thanks, John
