Fender. I'd like to have a Gibson Les Paul, but have you seen the prices? The Epiphone Slash Les Paul is more expensive than twice as expensive as Mexicanl Artist Fenders and even more than some Custom Shop Fenders. For one with the Gibson label they want like $5000. I picked up a Gibson Les Paul in Guitar Center recently - listed like $3500 and it was a standard not an artist or anything. I tested the action and it was basically just mediocre - substantially higher than my Stratocaster now that I've ste it up. Supposedly, Les Pauls are easier to play because the string tension is less or something, but I felt no difference. Humbuckers are just more forgiving of sucking because of the way the sound is cancelled out losing clarity, and so people just think they aren't making any mistakes . . . but I just turn down the tone knobs for some of the same thing . . .

Bottom line, Gibson sticks it to the public. Fender takes more of a chicken in every pot approach with a lot of different offerings at very fair prices, probably doing a lot more volume.

I say Fender, because I do not like any of the Gibson basses and I doubt that I will ever own a Gibson(unless one was given to me).JMO

This is like saying: which scale length do you like best, 24 3/4" or 25 1/2"? Both have their places. But I like Fenders for the extra clarity and response. Besides, I think that Gibson rides far more on their reputation than Fender ever did. Fender innovates. Gibson reacts. And DON'T get me started about the 'robot tuner' Gibson-that seems to me to be EXACTLY like LED lit fretboards- ultimately meant for the terminally lazy. I can't imagine how all that hardware would actually ADD to the tone!

Even though this is a Fender site and I have more Fender guitars...I went with Gibson. I just love humbuckers, I know Fender has humbucker guitars, but I just prefer Gibson.

They are 2 completely different guitars and that is one reason I like, play, and own both.

You can not give a fair judgment on the action of a guitar by playing a guitar at GC. I don't think I have ever seen a properly setup guitar on the walls at any GC.

Hi CA Feathers -

The one I played at GC was I'm sure right out of the box and onto the wall, absolutely. I've got no doubt at all a Les Paul can have a low action, no doubt about it. Not saying it can't. Also, I've got plenty of respect for guitarists who use the Les Paul from Slash to Jimmy Page to Clapton at times. From a value point of view, there's no comparison imho. My Strat has a low action too. Point is that Gibson wants a fortune for their guitars, and they don't come set up perfectly (any more than factory Fenders do). With an unlimited budget, I'd absolutely have a Les Paul - probably a Jimmy Page and a Slash. I'd also have a PRS. My Hotrodded (just Custom Shop Texas Specials and five springs in the trem and thanks for that tip CA Feathers along with others) Highway One is a match for the Gibson or PRS, at a fraction of the price. That's the beauty of Fender guitars.

I'll pass on voting. It's a false dichotomy. They're apples and oranges. I have, and have had, both over the years.

On the other, hand, Fender put me in their ads, and Gibson didn't...

If I had to choose I'd keep my Les Paul over my Mustang.

I went with fender, even though I enjoy the aspects of a gibson guitar. I just don't like the price tag on the gibson.

i am the proud owner of eight guitars and two basses and i have to say i love them all , there is no need for me to compare and try to say which one is the best ,fender and gibson are both quality instruments in both design and craftsmenship, but i must admit my 1972 twin reverb is my favorite amp and my baby.
