Hi all,

I've decided I'd like to get a proper delay pedal at some point, because I only have the delay from my Boss multi effects pedal. There is one slight snag-I am very bewildered at the number of delay pedals around! Some with chorus and modulation, some with none, some with more adjustable parameters, some with more or less maximum delay time-I don't really know where to start :D

I play blues, classic rock, and rock mainly. I've been drawn to the Boss DD-7, the DD-3 seems to be similar but with less delay time. I also think the various EH Memory and #1 Echo pedals seem very good, but I'm not sure if they have enough delay time? How much delay time would people say they use most often, and how much is it good to have available?

If anybody has any suggestions for pedals, and also about delay time, I would be happy to hear :D

Howdy!

I'm currently saving my hard earned pennies to buy one of these...

All the delay sounds you'll probably ever need and It's got a decent loop time too. Pretty much industry standard these days and seen on plenty of top artist's pedal boards.

Basically, this delay pedal is made from 100% Win! :D

Hope this helps!

Andy

i'd never, ever argue with Andy. that looks like a great delay. just too many knobs for an idiot like me.
i have the Carbon Copy and i'm drawing a blank trying to remember the manufacturer. (idiot).
mine stays set the same all the time. rather long delay but it fades out pretty fast. just a slight, audible delay. i know this makes zero sense but i'm trying to explain best i can.
just shoot me someone.

Thanks for your quick reply Andy

How much delay time does that offer? And how would you compare it to an analog pedal like the Memory Boy? Because I'm not sure if getting a digital pedal (like the DD7, I think) would be much of an upgrade in sound from my ME-25, although the features may be much greater.

That pedal seems very good, although could be a little over my budget. If it or something like it is streets ahead of the other options, I may pay that much for value. But for the moment I will try to keep the price down, even though that unfortunately spoils the fun of shopping a bit

I'm still wondering how much delay time is necessary though, because some pedals seem to have only 500 or 600 ms of delay, whilst others like the DD7 have much more, like 6.4 seconds.

Thanks for the help :D

I know what you mean about the fade. The manufacturer by the way is MXR, Dunlop :D

How much delay do you usually use? Your pedal has 600ms I think-is that usually enough for your styles(what are your styles :D ). Does 600ms cover all the bases? I don't really have a clue, I've never been here before :D

I prefer analogue delay over digital delay. I like way the sound degrades.
For what you play, I wouldn't be looking at any more than 230-300 milliseconds.

Delay is a quick way to make yourself sound good and quickly becomes a crutch. I'm as guilty of it as anyone.

I got one of these

And soon knocked it on the head for one of these

Which I infinitely prefer.

When I want to really treat myself I use

Image

On my birthday or when I've been particularly spectacular I use this

Told ya I like delay.

i use mine only for solos and maybe a few intros. i try to keep it very subtle. i play a wide variety of stuff. the MXR is a good unit that i think might suit your needs. i hardly tap the surface of what it will actually do.
you'll get some great advice from smarter folks here.

I use a memory man on those rare occasions i need delay, i think its the late 70's made version, so i do not know how good the new ones are. actually i am not sure where it is at the moment :?
I got a TC nova repeater a few years back and it wasn't bad. the tap tempo was nice to have.
but now it is covered in dust

hey nikininja is there any way i could get a photo of the inside of that watkins? :D

No problem! :D

Yeah, its a bit pricey and although I can't find any proper details, I'm fairly sure the DL4 has an outrageous delay time. They even extended the times when modelled some of the pedals used. Their version of the Memory Man, for example will, go to 500ms. The looper will do 14 seconds... which is nice!

I can't comment too much as I haven't tried out many delays after finding the DL4 so freak'in awesome. 8)

As far as a reasonably priced analogue pedal goes, I liked both the MXR Cabon Copy and the EX Memory Toy (in their new nano range) when I tried them. The Carbon Copy get good reviews from plenty of Forumites here.

Of course you could get yourself a proper delay like a Ninja has.

Awesome! 8)

Another analog/MXR CC fan here. Nothing like some of that liquidy single coil tone 8)

+2 (or 3?) on the MXR Carbon Copy.

It doesn't have a looper or a billion mSec delay time, but for the money, I find it to be one of the best on the market for blues, classic rock and even rockabilly. The modulation button does very well emulating the tape warble of of tape delay units, too.

Andy's spot on with his choice, if you have the cash and the need for longer delay times or a looper, but the Carbon Copy does it for me.

Which one.

The amp is valve, hand wired. They knew how to make em properly in them days. Pretty much a class5 without the frilly bits or the excessive gain.

Image

The echo is all solid state. The valve units go for twice what I paid for that one.

The Line 6 is incredible, i have it and there's one big problem with it: there's too many options  seriously, you have to try it to believe it, plus if you buy the expression pedal to go with it you can program two different settings for each footswitch option that you save. You can then toggle between them using the footswitch. Set up a short delay with the expression heel down then program a longer delay on the toe down setting 8)

It's a crazy pedal

Thanks for all your replies,

It's looking like the Carbon Copy and Line 6 DL4 are very popular. The carbon copy is probably more in my price range. I will go and try some at as soon as I can, and have decided what the choices are.

The BBE Two Timer looks like a good proposition, although I would be concerned about the delay time being 330ms max.

So, does anybody have anything to say about the Boss DD7, and also the Electro-Harmonix options? To me, on paper, they look very good. But I have no experience here, so am keen to hear your opinions.

One other thing-music in the style of Pink Floyd and David Gilmour-how long a delay does he use? I would like, ideally, to have the option of that kind of effect available too. Unfortunately my list of criteria gets longer and longer

Thanks for all your help, this is helping me work out what I need and also narrow down the choices from the very long list I started with! :D

the lead dress on that amp is super clean, is that the original wiring?

also that is what i was wondering about the tape echo, if it was valve or not :)
thanks for the photos i will analyze them for a few hours :P
