sorry to hear that :?

personally I think going to school for that these days wouldn't be very useful now that everything is digital. most don't even use a watch since cell phones do the job. also i imagine it would be difficult to make a living doing it. but mechanical watches are a complicated precision device, you may enjoy playing with one. there is a nice sense of pride when you get your fist one ticking

(Sentimental Drivel):
since you never had the opportunity to know your father, this as a hobby would honor his memory and bring you closer to him in the long run. even if you don't enjoy it its kinda like looking through his eyes. seeing his tools strewn about, dabbling in his trade.

just food for thought.

besides you already have the tools and that is the expensive part :D

and getting back on topic. let us know your results if you try to alter the magnet.

SBD,

I don't know, there are a lot of old watches and clocks out there thay folks like to have around. One could probably make a living in a big city repairaing real timepieces.

Well thats not drivel at all, and an nice thought actually, perhaps when I retire.

I will post if I decide to try something. Kid of silly but was thinking probably the easiest thing to do would to screw the ceramic PUPS down, away from the strings a little farther and probably get a more mellow tone. Not as much fun as tinkering with the PUP! :D

Ah-ha, so they do. That's new, since last time I looked.

Possibilities...

Magnets, the last frontier of pickup construction!

A guy in the "Ask Mike" section brought up tapped coil pickups (not split coil humbuckers). I think we talked about it some time ago. I did a search and there do seem to be some makers of them. Though it wouldn't be hard to make one. Take a normal 6K ohm single coil, add another eyelet and wind some more wire to get 8K or 10K or ... then with a flip of a switch, you could go from a vintage s.c. pickup to an overwound.
