I don't think it was Sears and Roebuck alone, lots of credit needs to go to National and Dobro also.

at work I have a 1970 re-print of Sears & Robucks 1900 catalog....
in it are 2 pages of banjos, 2 pages of mandolins, 3 pages of violins violas lutes and fiddles, & a page of guitars, even the finest weren't over $35 & other odd assorted instruments.
The 1900 catalog also offered Morpheine, Opium, Cocaine, & Coedine for sale to the general public, which I imagine also gave rise to new genres of music & arts.

That was an interesting and informative read. My first guitar came from Sears, too. And it was ordered out of the catalog as there were none on hand in town at the time.

1963 Sears Silvertone, two single coils, tone & volume knobs and three-way switch.
