SK...Don't let the Negative Nancies and Debbie Downers of the world get you down...your music is just fine, you are on the right track and your taking the right path of musical exploration...and that would be your own.

Nice playing and vocals. Keep being you.

Wading back over to the contentious waters...

I think a lot of the players who listen to and play non-mainstream/alternative music are often turned off by talented players (such as SuperKid) who are playing mainstream music.
I assume (dangerous, I know) that they are irritated because they see a person who could play just about anything but chooses to play something the alternative player sees as a "re-tread".

On the other hand, the mainstream player is playing something they are passionate about--be it the Beatles, Stones, SRV or whatever--and aren't worried that someone else might see them as a re-tread.

I mostly play blues. Yes, there's some classic rock/blues-rock tendencies and some Outlaw Country tendencies thrown in there for good measure, but primarily I'm a blues player. If someone sees me as re-treading because I'm playing blues like my heroes, then I'll generally take it as a compliment. I'll think, "Ok, so I remind you of something you heard on a record from 1959? Cool! I must be doing it right!"
I once played one of my original songs and a woman saying, "I must have heard that before, I just don't know where..." Well, since it was a rockabilly-style song I had written, I took that as a great compliment (I assume she was being complimentary).

After being told my band sounded like The Fabulous Thunderbirds and ZZ Top touring with Waylon Jennings, I thought, "Good! Somebody recognizes what I listen to, and I can finally reproduce the sounds in my head."

So (Floyd) you may hear SuperKid's recordings and think, "It's been done before, show me something new..." but he is probably thrilled that someone thinks he sounds like the Beatles (or whoever).

Likewise, I laugh when alt players talk about how "original" each of their favorite bands are, when many of them are re-treads of earlier alternative, punk or underground bands...nothing against any of them (and I like some of them), but more often than not, most punk bands are re-treading MC5, the Ramones or the Sex Pistols, most hard-core underground bands are re-treading GG Allin or Iggy Pop.

...and nobody's really doing anything as revolutionary as what Muddy Waters did with his electric microtones or what Little Walter did with a mic and overdriven amp--way back in the 1950's.

I Am pretty sure he didn't reccomend he changes his playing style, just that he branches out in his musical taste. And if I read correctly (I just got up an I'm not the morning person..), your saying that someone who listens to alt/punk music, cant be passionate about it? Saying thats a bit prejudice.
On the lighter side, Skid is probably 10x more talented than me. I have a high respect for his approach to guitar playing, and now, singing.

Nice performance and recording! I wish I could sing anywhere near that well.

The discussion in this thread has also been interesting. Some good points on all sides and it makes me want to seek out some new/different music.

Oh no, I wasn't doubting anyone's passion (especially yours, Riley--I know you're a determined and passionate artist), nor was I saying that you were recommending that he change his style...I was just saying that we ALL have a targeted sound or style in our mind or in our heart, and then we set out to learn how to make that sound...

So--no, I wasn't insulting ALL alt-music lovers, just the ones who claim that everything is a boring retread...

However, It is true that a certain segment of the playing population is constantly critical of other's attempts at replicating or perfecting a sound or style from a bygone era. One guy (20 years my senior) who I used to jam with was extremely talented, but outrageously hateful at my attempts to play like my heroes (especially in my early days, it was Stones + Muddy Waters 24/7, later the T-Birds and ZZ Top took precedence)...but I finally told him, "Hey man, you've already had your chance to muddle through and sound like a beginner...now give me my chance!"

I cut off association with him due to this attitude (amongst other things), and continued playing and writing my own material. Years later, when the Armadillos had a gig but were short a bassist (our regular was out of town), I called him, knowing he was an excellent bassist as well as guitarist.
We had no chance for a rehearsal, so we just simplifies the set list to 3-chord I-IV-V progressions and told him to watch the drummer or me for the breaks.
It was funny watching him stumble through my original songs (70% of the set list) like I used to stumble through the old Stones songs he knew inside-out. During the break, he said, "Man, who wrote all this stuff? It's pretty good, but I haven't ever heard any of it!"

When the drummer told him it was me, he looked astounded. "You just wrote the lyrics, right? Surely you didn't write this music!"

I reverted to the original set list that had multiple chord or meter changes, medleys of songs that shouldn't go together (but somehow do) and a lot of intricate bass work, just because he made that arrogant statement.

That was extremely entertaining, watching that jerk struggle...

+1 on everything that Screamin has said in this thread.

SKid, you sound great and I look forward to you posting more. The key is to enjoy what you play and play what you want and when you sound that good doing it, people should give you the props you deserve.

I think some of the negative posts are coming from folks that have been critisized for doing "their own thing" when in all reality those that were given honest criticism, took it wrong and are now lashing out at folks like SK.

Not really... I'm just saying he should expand his horizons a little since his tastes seem ridiculously narrow right now. Most of the criticism I receive about my playing tends to be things I agree need improvement.
