Since I'm hopelessly guitarded, for my birthday back in March the Missus gave me 3 music related books, one was called "2,000 Guitars" all in all it's a great book with great pix of some very rare and desireable guitars except when you come to the "P" section where you see photos of what I counted up to be 141 PRS guitars.I like PRS guitars as much as the next guy and acknowledge the fact that they make some of the finest guitars available but for the editors who compiled the book to put in almost 150 guitars of one brand, where many of the models only have subtle differences,is a sign of pure laziness as far as I'm concerned and they chose to use the PRS guitars just to take up space and act as a filler to make the book thicker.

Other than the over-abundance of PRS guitars it is a very good book filled with eye candy and some desireable vintage guitars. For $40 it's well worth buying.

This seems to be common with a few of the guitar encyclopedias...............yeah they are nice but I think PRS are going for world domination.............

I think one of the reasons PRS guitars get so much attention is the consistently good quality (even in the "budget" SE series), the fact that the guitars are usually gorgeous, and (if you've ever met him) Paul Reed Smith himself.

I think many authors and guitar enthusiasts focus on PRS guitars because they have the reputation of being "instant classics/future legends" in the same vein as early Fenders and Gibsons...and they may be right. It's one of the best (relatively) "new" manufacturers to come along, and some of his improvements of Gibson-style parts (bridges especially) are amazing. I think there's gonna eventually be a lot of their early and limited-edition axes that command prices like vintage Fenders and Gibsons.

As far as PRS (the man), he's an intelligent, interesting and enthusiastic luthier, player and businessman...and a heckuva nice guy on the two occasions I met him.

Having said all that, I'm not a huge fan of their guitars. They just don't "do it" for me. Well-made, great looking, quality instruments that I just can't make sound good...I love them in other people's hands--David Grissom is one of my favorite players of all time, especially his work with Joe Ely and Storyville--but you probably won't see one in my herd.

I have a few of these types of books too. One of my faves is the Chet Atkins one where you see his entire collection. Wonderful book. Also the Chinery collection book is mindblowing , must be one of the best collections of all time. Another one i like is the Steve Howe book. 8)

SA...+10K...very rarely do I so totally agree with someones post! You have discribed the man exactly as he is (on the two occasions I met him he was exactly as you discribed). As for the guitars, I owned a CE Bolt-On with a amazingly flamed top in rootbeer color and it played great, workmanship was perfect...but I just couldn't get warmed up to it. I loved to look at it, but just couldn't get the sound...traded it for Les Paul.

FWIW
