So, I've been browsing Goodwill again (too soon after payday) and I came across something really cool. I've been wanted a lap steel for close to two years now, but I'm not a big fan of the cheap ones today. Yet I didn't want to spend very much on one since I don't know how well I'll take to it yet. Anyway, I ran across one that caught my eye, the price was right (cheap), and it's got a hundred times more bluesy mojo than any new one I've seen (and we all know that bluesy mojo is an important part of why we buy the gear we do lol). It was a bit of an impulse buy. With college looming just around the corner I guess this is my last chance to treat myself. But without further to do, here's my latest venture into resurrecting a guitar someone else thought was junk.

My new 1954 Supro Student Deluxe.

The logo is probably my favorite part, very retro and cool.

I still need to test the electronics. If they work, I'm installing a regular jack instead of that stupid built in cable. Hope that doesn't hurt the value when my grandchildren bring it to Antiques Roadshow, but I don't think they'll ever be on par with Fender/Gibson vintage prices. I've already ruined one set of bakelite tuning keys on my grandpa's Airline guitar, so I'm not even going to touch these. It might take some hunting to find an inexpensive replacement pair.

The case that came with it has a grey (maybe used to be white?) bakelite handle, grey (definitely used to be white) trim and fake black crocodile skin on the top, back and sides. Really funky.

That's cool...great score!

Of course, when your grandkids take it to Antiques Road Show, they appraisers will say, "The real value lies in the fact that this was played on Texas Guitar Slinger's "Sit On My Lap, Baby" album, which was mostly lap steel solos...which we all remember was the album for which she won 12 Grammys, 17 WC Handy awards, and had quadruple platinum sales in the first six weeks after it's release..."
It could happen! 8)

Haha - you beat me to it! :D

Judging by recent experience, I'm now waiting impatiently for a track or YouTube clip... 8)

Cheers - C

PS: I know someone on this Forum who's going to like that brand logo.

Reminds me of the time I was in goodwill and I saw a Fender Stratocaster laying on the back floor with a large red sticker saying "$20" it was only when I got within 10 feet that I saw the buttons. #$@*&!% guitar hero...

And last summer, I found a vintage Hagstrom for $125. I came back the next week to pick it up and it was gone. I'm still upset about that.

Supro was the budget brand of the National Dobro Co. Nice score. That particular model is listed in the Vintage guitar guide. Clean that baby up and make some music. :D Its begging to be played. 8)

Very, very nice find! Holy smokes!!
As for the tuning keys, give 'em a squirt of penetrating oil an let them sit for a day or two. Gently turn back and forth ever so slightly until they un-stick. Once the "crud seal" lets loose, continue turning the key back and forth a little farther each time.
Never force it, just work it a little at a time and things should work out just fine.
I don't see that they are fastened on the front with nuts, so they're probably fastened in the back of the head with screws.
If you come across a stubborn one, remove it and hit it with a propane torch. Heat will loosen whatever is binding it up as the metal will expand.

Just a "car-guy" trick, but it works on just about any mechanical metal device. 8)

My first electric guitar was a Supro. Great find Texas!

Just wondering, is the bridge/pickup section black powder coated or rusty? I can't tell from the picture.
