I have this old hollow body guitar that needs some work, i think its a fender but I'm not sure . I took the whammy bar off to change the washers, the bridge is not attached and has little pencil marks so you know where to line it up. i cant seem to find any markings of numbers on it at all. I read on a site that there may be serial numbers behind where the neck is screws in? any help at all would be much appreciated. heres some pics...

Looks like an Electra or Harmony to me, but there were so many budget brands like that in the 60's that I really don't know.

When you're trying to find information about a guitar, check the electronics. Sometimes pots will have serial number that you can approximately date a guitar by, or switches and capacitors that might also hold clues to it's age and where it was made.

The appointments are reminescent of the instruments produced by EKO and Hagström in the late '60s, possibly the early '70's.

Ha! Well this has led me off on a long, enjoyable and ultimately fruitless search! :D

I don't think it's a Hagstrom: lots of bits of this guitar look rather similar to vintage Hagstroms, but I can't find anything that matches exactly.

Especially that vibrato tailpiece: I've never seen that one before and can't find a match for it anywhere. However, lots of weird and wonderful things along those lines were coming out of both Scandinavia and Japan at that time, so I suspect it's a fair bet your guitar comes from one or other of those sources, SearchingForTheSound.

...Or somewhere else, of course.

Fascinating to see if someone can get closer. I'd certainly be curious to see if the neck joint or potentiometers yield more info.

Cheers - C

Maybe even Teisco. There were a lot of guitars like that in the 60's and 70's. Lots of Teisco guitars had that same truss rod adjustment. But that tailpiece looks a little Hagstromesque. It's different for sure. I seriously doubt it's a Fender. There were lots of headstocks that looked like Fender. Bigsby comes to mind. I'm no guitar historian though.

I saw a Teisco just like that a couple months ago. those are the same pickups Teisco slapped into everything as well.

This is a bit funny to me because my business partner brought in his old guitar the other day and asked me if I could make it usable. It looks a lot like this one but with two pickups and a different bridge. Same headstock. There's no markings anywhere on the guitar which lead me to think it was cheap knockoff of some kind and the manufacturer didn't want to be known. I'll post a pic of it just to compare. His strings were stuck to the nut and I had to pry them out.

Sticky nuts always lead to an uncomfortable situation.

...and that's why we keep you around, Buxom...to say these uncomfortable things that should be left unsaid and don't contribute to the discussion, but still make it entertaining.

Thank you for your service, young man.

Remember, offbeat humor doesn't always lead to getting beaten off!

I don't even have to play well, as long as the crowds keep laughing :P

Here's the guitar my friend asked me to make usable for him. A lot of similarities to the OP's, except this one has a set bridge. It was pretty sad when I got it. I don't know how usable it will be but I'll finish cleaning it up, put on some strings and make a few adjustments the best I can. It may live to play Hang On Sloopy yet again!

I think that the Teisco route is the most feasable one to go on as that neck adjustment method was almost entirely endemic to the Teisco and its sub-brands such as Brentwood and Audition. Some of the Silvertone branded guitars also had this type of neck adjustment but they were made by Teisco too for some time during the 60s and 70s.

I'd suggest the vibrato is the key to this thing. I can't find another the same as SearchingForTheSound's anywhere - if anyone can I should think they've nailed it.

I think its a Winston

The were made in Japan in the 60s and 70s and copied just about every popular style. My first guitar I got in 68 and was a nod to the Hofner Bass. Here it is with my nephews in the 80s after it had been busted up, repaired and sanded before it was busted again for all time.

Silvertone was my first guess, but after looking at some photos my money is on Tiesco.
Tail-piece, pick-ups, headstock, location of the switches - all characteristic of the brand.
