Can't stand ted for many reasons, but the man can riff. If only he'd shut up while doing it.

Too many AC/DC ones, 95% are winners. But I've always thought this one overlooked and underrated. It just flat out rocks.

A good riff should be recognisable when typed out in dum-dum*, as in...

dah-daaa dum dum dum
da-dum-dum-dum da-dum

and

DUM DUM dah-der-dah-der-de
DUM DUM dah-der-dah-der-de
DUM DUM dah-der-dah-der-de
DUM DUM dah-der-dah-weeee-ee-ee

*dum-dum: noun - a musical annotation which only exists in Nobby's head

Great thread. Lots of classic songs mentioned. Most seem to point to the intro's and back to the days when a killer guitar riff was how all good rock songs started. I was trying to think of a good one and I kept coming back to Aerosmith. Back to the "Toys in the Attic" and "Rocks" days. Their songs would just grab you right off the bat and suck you in. Joe Perry was (is) a master at it. He wrote some of the most recognizable and iconic guitar riffs ever.

Of course, the intro to end all intro's is without a doubt, "Eruption" by (do I even need to say it?)

I went through my cd collection last week and popped in one I hadn't heard in a long time. The first riff started, and I swear it was like hearing it for the first time again. Just shocked at the great sound of that guitar and amp. A nice open airy crunch!!

It was The Black Crowes' "Twice As Hard" from the Shake Your Money Maker cd.

I sat back and just had to listen to the whole cd again. As I'm listening to it, the one thing that I took from it was how every single song on it was a hit. Rare to come by these days. 10 solid, well written, greatly performed songs.

That first riff draws you in for the ride right away.

what I posted last year, thx for resurecting this thread rudorama

Hey, my pleasure Solid Body! I'm just grateful to all you longtime forum guys who kept things going so latecomers like me could learn so much!

And you all know who you are! :D

I would like to add to the list Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way", and Jimmy (aka the "human riff machine") Page's intro to "Heartbreaker".

I'm still sticking with what I said almost a year ago, 'cannon' by the white stripes. Since then I have heard the man himself play that song live, and that just made the experience of listening to it 100x better.

I am yet to hear another riff that's as powerful as that, and has given me that much #$@*&!% energy, I just wanna rip my eyes out and destroy everything around me.
That's the only song that I've actually broke one of my guitars while I was playing it.

Heh! Another one bites the dust and killing in the name.

Maybe that's why dum-dum hasn't caught on...
