I was watching a Fleetwood Mac documentary last night and Lindsey Buckingham played the horn part from Tusk on the guitar as he wrote it. It was pretty great.

One opening riff that rarely gets mentioned yet is one of the most revered and recognizeable is the incredible intro of "Don't Fear The Reaper" by The Blue Oyster Cult. As difficult as the riff sounds,it's surprisingly easy to play. Most of Jimi's intros are incredible:The intro to Foxy Lady builds up with a rising wail until it reaches an orgasmic cresendo. The intro of Are You Experienced? also fades in in a similar manner.Voodoo Child (slight return) has also reached iconic status as one of the most famed of rock intros. Purple Haze,The Wind Cries Mary,May This Be Love and many others also have become historic intros because of Jimi's brilliance with starting a song.Of course it would be remiss of me not to mention probably the prettiest intro of a song ever composed and that is Little Wing it never ceases to bring a lump to my throat even after over 40 years.Angel and Drifting would have to be close behind. The intro of Machine Gun assures the listener that there is something astounding to follow.

I don't think that there ever will be a rock musician with so many memoriable intros as Jimi Hendrix and most of his endings were just as astounding too.

I agree with pretty much everyone so far but would like to add 'Life in the Fast Lane' by the Eagles..............simple, simple riff but, especially live, kicks $@!!!

How about a 2 for 1. The bass riff intro followed by the guitar solo in Cream's Badge.
