I would try Sam Ash before Amazon. I would also go to an actual music store and ask for help. I bought one for my girlfriend there. Very helpful. Most of us are guitarists here.

Dunno whether action comes into it as much as it does with guitar. Luckily the world of starter instruments is not like when I started playing.

Coupled with some lessons at school, she seems to be doing well. Far better at violin after five months than I was at guitar after five months.

I think lessons are the key. It ain't like 3 chords and the truth.

I was in that position last year. I ended up buying a 3/4 size Strunal violin.



I used to shop at Casio music (who runs www.interstatemusic.com), so I called them and talked to someone in their violin department. Then I ordered it. I got a pretty good deal on a Strunal 260 model. And it seems to be a pretty decent violin.
