i have (2) 2x12 tube amps. how do i run the 60 watter to the 100 watter without blowing them both up. dude at the music store said to run the 100 watter as a "powered cabinet'. he explained but i forgot.
any help would be appreciated. hell, is it even a good idea?

in other news, hemp seeds are good.

It's not advisable to run the speaker out of one amp into the input of another, ever. A guitar amps input doesn't give anywhere near enough resistance, like a speaker would. And isn't designed to handle more than a couple of watts power.

I just wouldn't do it, at all.

If both amps have a effects loop. You could run the effects loop send of one amp into the return of the other. That would get you the pre-amp sound of one amp and the power amp sound of the other.

I don't know if you could hook both amps up together via the effects loop so its

Guitar>Amp1, Amp1 effects send> Amp2 effects return. Amp2 effects send>Amp1 effects return.

I've never done it. I have a feeling you'd still have to find a way of splitting your guitar to amp signal and putting it into both amps. Which if your going to do, why muck about with the effects loops.

I use 2 amps (or rather used to). I'd split the guitar signal using a pedal with a stereo out.

Mr. Nik, thanx for the response. the whole idea makes me nervous. it is something that was suggested to me and i just don't know enough to feel comfy doing it.
here's why i ask. when we play out, i stand in front of my amp. it's the only thing i hear besides the drummer. other guitarist is constantly wanting me turn it up. i refuse because (1) all i can hear is me and (2) we play too f-ing loud to begin with. thats one reason we don't gig often and it is frustrating.
my idea was to put the peavey (100 watter) on his side of the stage and let him control the volume. i'd keep the blackstar on my side.
dude at store explained 2 scenarios of how to use the xtra amp. 1 was a powered speaker which i liked. everything setting-wise coming from the blackstar. 2 was running them both together and both having their own settings. i didn't like that scenario.
the whole idea scares me because i don't have money to repair either for some idea i got from a salesman.
forgive the long post. work is slow.

If your 60-watter has two inputs on the same channel (like vintage Fenders), you could:

Plug your guitar into input 1 on a channel
Plug a second instrument cable into input 2 of that same channel
Plug the other end of that second instrument cable into the input of your 100watt amp.

I used to do this with my Fender '63 reissue Vibroverb and my 1972 Fender Bassman Ten, and it worked monstrously well...

only 1 input armadillo.
16 miles north of the red river? i've always wanted to ask what area you are in. we often spend weekends in mccurtain county when we're not working.

My old gig rig from when we played too loud too.

The pedal on the far left has two outputs, one went to the head, one the combo. I never used the effects, just the outputs.

You'd be far better off just to do something about the sound of the band though. And try standing somewhere else on stage. Maybe more towards center will help lessen your perceived volume and allow you to hear others more. Same for the other guitarist.

yep, i usually stand a bit to the side so its not completely blasting my ears.
here's the thing. other guitarist thinks loud equals good. it will never ever change. i play with family so it gets kinda complicated. this was just a thought to try and prove a point and solve a problem. here dude. its all yours. turn it up as loud as you want.

sadly, i don't think i'll be jammin' with the fam nuch longer. stuff like this is just getting so very old.

Nik, i'm going to try the effects loop thing.

Nik, I used to play through two amps. The first time I tried it the layered sound of the two amps just blew me away. I had a pan pedal that I hacked to make it stay in a middle position.

I could do all sorts of crazy (self-indulgent) things with that setup.

Back in those days I only played in the garage. :P Not sure how a dual system would work in a public venue.

Mhowell

It's good for noisy punk club gigs. I never panned it. I just set one amp up for a treble sound and one for a bass sound. Both amps dirty. The bass side less dirty than the treble. The combo (into the 4x12) running el34's for bass and the head (into the 2x12 of the combo) KT88's for treble. Weird and backwards I know but it worked.
