I have two favorite distortion pedals, one I have, and the other to be bought soon. The one I have is the MXR Custom Badass 78 Distortion. It's fun in a lot of different ways. The one I want very badly is either the Visual Sound Son of Hyde or the Jekyll and Hyde. At least with the J and H, I can stack the overdrive with the overdrive in my VS Route 66, which are tubescreamer clones. We all know the tonal goodness of stacking tubescreamers ;)

I have a DigiTech Metal Master and I'm currently considering a DS-1. What I don't like about the MM is you can't play anything but metal with it. Even its most conservative setting is pretty heavily distorted.

BYOC clone of the Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal. I like it way better than my Tube Screamer. I have two one stock and one that I modded for mt Strat. Guys and Gals, try building your own pedals. It's fun and a learning experience too.

+1

I built the BYOC Classic Overdrive (Tube Screamer) and it was a lot of fun and it sounds great!

As far as distortion pedals, the most amazing pedal I have ever heard was the Fulltone OCD. One of these days I will have one on my pedal board.

I couldn't pick a favourite selection because I have 3 of the brands listed that I love. My first distortion pedal was an E-H Big Muff Pi that I bought used in 1969,I have bought many to replace it since as "upgrades"but the Muff keeps finding its way back into my effects chain.I also have an original issue Marshall Guv'nor and that is an incredibly versatile pedal capable of just about any level of boost and/or distortion. You can get a very clean but noticeable boost or a slight boost with a hint of overdrive all the way up to the snarling beastial properties of a plexi stack at full bore.Last but not least is the Way Huge Green Rhino which can be as nasty as a charging rhino or as subdued as a $@!&# cat. The first time I plugged in my Green Rhino with one of my Strats I got a real fat Dire Straits Sultans of Swing tone while with a bit of tweaking of the controls you can dial in any degree of raunch that you desire-from just a tad all the way up to face breaking all out grunge. All in all the 3 of these pedals are going to be mainstays in my pedal chain and I'll have each one of them at a certain setting so that any tone I want at any given time is just a stomp away.

I managed to bag a mint Vox Satchurator for £45...

..And it Rocks! Any overdrive pedal with a "More" button has got to be good, right? 8)

I have a Blackstar HT-5R Half Stack and the gain channel is pretty much the same as found in Blackstar's HT pedal. The Satchurator gives me something different. A very modern/contemporary and very Satch-like tone.

Its proved to be much more versatile that I was expecting with plenty of range between warm bluesy crunch and full on bonkers distortion. The "More" switch acts as a nice boost when the gain is low.

T'is much fun and gets the coveted Big Hairy Seal of Approval! :D

Enjoy!

Andy

Fulltone, all the way..

I have several high quality OD pedals, but the 2 that keep coming back onto my little board are the Fulldrive Mosfet 2 and the OCD. Of those, it's the OCD that gets most of my attention. It's been on my board now for the last 3 months.

I don't go for out and out distortion pedals these days. I discovered some years ago that it's not necessary to hide behind a solid wall of hi gain.. Metal heads obviously are excused..

My main distortion is a Tonerider British Distortion, it gets lovely overdrive tones and sounds very Marshall-esque when you crank the drive. Very cheap and well-built, sounds amazing. My OD pedal is a Radial Texas Bones, doesn't push into distortion territory as much as I would like but it gets really dirty for a drive pedal. At halfway it grits up as much as most pedals with the drive cranked
