I came across this awesome video the other day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XIUcRnMoU8

I was wondering how I could achieve a heavy guitar tone like her/Tom Morello?
What is she doing to get that guitar sliding sound at 0:18 seconds?

I've been playing guitar for about a year and am just now starting to learn about all the various types of guitar pedals and effects..its overwhelming.

First off, you need a guitar with humbucker pickups if you really want a heavy tone (my opinion of course). Then you need either a good Tube amp for distortion, or a Solid State amp and Distortion pedal. And the other effect used is a Wah Pedal. Having a delay pedal helps to smooth things out as well, but it's not a total necessity.

It's also my opinion that you should use the neck humbucker (the one closest to the neck) while using a wah pedal. Otherwise it will scream with treble.

The sliding sound she does in the video is simply her finger sliding down the fretboard on the low E-string.

Definitely up to personal taste. Morello himself often uses Strats and Teles with single coils, and certainly still sounds like him!

Neck pickup (either humbucker or single coil) and wah into a bit of distortion will get you the sort of tone in the vid with no problems.

get a high gain distortion pedal and an equalizer to fine tune it
