It sounds depressing almost every time tbh. I feel as if I have to play it slowly and at such a low volume. It never turns out right. But I was just recording some clean improv today, so I decided to upload it.

This is a far cry from playing with your teeth. Playing clean leaves no where to hide and this is one your best uploads IMO. Practicing cleanly and listening back to yourself will pay dividends.

Is that a Nirvana song? it reminds me of the progression on one of theirs "On A Plain" maybe but i'm not sure.

BTW i found out how you got to the searchers :P The Ramones also covered that song, at least it said that on YT. Is that where you first heard it?

Thanks. Clean playing to me is something that sounds better on paper than in practice. I was going to add some mutes and other things, but I just couldn't concentrate on it. I've not been well the past few days.

And about The Searchers, I heard that ages ago in the car with my grandma.

And it isn't a Nirvana song. It was just an improv. If it sounds like one, I'll take that as a compliment.

Playing clean especially at stage volumes is a hard thing to do and sound good,it makes you practice alot because it's all there for people to hear...no hiding.
A guy sat in with us for a few songs last Sat. night,he had that buzz, fuzz tone and you could barely hear the single notes,it was such a contrast to our tones which are really clean...he was a decent player, but it was so distorted that you really couldn't appreciate what he was doing.

I have found over the years that most people who play dirty all the time,do it that way as distortion is very forgiving to mistakes whereas playing clean will show up the slightest mistake made in playing.A guitarist who learns to play leads clean will sound amazing when playing dirty.Learning to play clean would be a boon to any guitar player-sure it takes a lot more time and concentration but it is guaranteed to make them a much much better guitarist and of course will raise their competance and confidence.

yeah, guitslinger, and just try to get one of those guys who plays dirty all the time to try a clean cranked Fender,it scares them....makes them feel "nekkid".
When I'm soloing and the volume is on about 6,you can really get some singing sustain on those vintage Fenders...but man, miss a lick and there's no hiding it!
It's hard to focus after making a mistake that's obvious, but I really practice and play solos to be a whole musical story within the song, and as speaking,I'm going to mispronounce a word or slur something,so it's never going to be perfect.
I remember reading something Eric Clapton said one time,he said there's times when he's soloing and thinks,"Man,I'm flying!",and about that time is when he makes a mistake...so true.

I mean, I play clean probably 40% of the time now. It just always sounds depressing and quiet to me, and that's why it rarely gets recorded.

Interestingly enough, I've been listening to a lot of bands that play with insane amounts of distortion lately (Black Keys, White Stripes, Jack White solo, etc.), but I've been turning down or off the previously-omnipresent TubeScreamer effect.

I don't know why. :?

But as noted by Reb and GuitSlinger, it's making me work a bit harder.
