I have already done enough damage to my ears that I have two forms of tinitus, so going forward I am interested in a good brand of hearing protection. Pipe up please if you use any and which you would suggest. I can search the net for this but I want actual user input here.

Thanks

The best route is to go to an audiologist and have custom plugs moulded to your ear canals. More expensive than generic plugs, but worth the money because they fit perfectly, won't annoy you with 'hotspots', and don't allow sound to leak around them.

These are highly thought of as well - http://www.etymotic.com/hp/erme.html

I just steal (uh, borrow) them from my job.

Several different styles to choose from at work, which is required to wear out in the units. I've found a couple of different pairs that work really well. You can get a variety pack from internet safety companies to find out which pair fits best.

Lady Armadillo stands behind me and puts her fingers in my ears.

Actually, I have some higher-end plugs that reduce volume but don't mess up too many frequencies...I'll have to look the brand name up.

 :?
Yeah I found out about hearing protection a little late.........

tinitus and 40% hearing loss later I now use in ear monitors as any plugs actually cause problems with the hearing loss I already have........

I use Hearos. The only problem I have is that I can hear the ringing in my ears worse when the music stops. Tinnitus isn't a joke, I have it, and sometimes it just drives you nuts. It can't be fixed. Protect your hearing.

I have 14khz ringing all the time. I just notice it more at different times and I also have a low rumble that I only hear when I'm trying to sleep. Thanks for the feedback so far folks.

Arjay: I need 'em more for concerts than anything else. I like to be close to the front and that has it's problems.

I use Vater Percussion earplugs, they have 2 pairs of baffles that you can interchange for greater volume suppression when needed. I paid about $20 for mine and really find them good as they have minimal effect on cancelling out certain frequencies and you pretty well hear everything that you're supposed to but at a lower volume.

Right now I use cheap Etymotics (like Hearos) when I'm at concerts. I have to admit I'm pretty bad about using them onstage though. I prefer to hear what it actually sounds like when I'm playing. I really need to invest in some of those custom earplugs made specifically for musicians someday when I have the money.

I too have tinnitus and I have been using lipoflavinoid plus and it does in fact work or help for me.You have to take it regulalry but it has been helping.I have it so bad at times I can't concentrate.Mine is mainly from use of firearms with inadequate protection years ago :( I now take all necessary actions to protect them

Ear plugs dull my hearing badly, even in-ear monitors.

I can still hear things most people can't hear, but I know my ears took a hit.

I was about to go see a doctor for a hearing aid.

Lipoflavinoid looks interesting! How long have you been taking this for and what does it do for your hearing??? Any side effects?

Ha, that's interesting. They actually do the opposite for me. Ear plugs cut down the white noise effect of high volume so I can hear the bits I want to hear better. I positively prefer wearing them.

Personally, I just use the cheapo generic type in the pic below. I am certain the glamorous custom made jobbies are much better, but cripes they can be expensive! That's a serious issue: people need to be protecting their ears from the start but young players likely aren't in a position to shell out the cash required.

Still, the basic ones below are much better than nothing. And a good tip is not to buy them in music stores, where they are insanely over-priced. I've seen the identical product (under many different brand names) sold as a travel aid for use on airlines and such at about a quarter the price. Check out the revolving accessories stand in luggage shops, airports and similar.

Or go for Shure's custom-fitted top-end in-ear monitoring system. So far that's the best I've come across - if you are willing to pay.

Cheers - C
