None of you like "contemporary" country music (and I tend to agree) yet country music is probably more popular today than it's been in decades. :)

There's a radio station here in Phoenix, "The Ride, 94.1" that mixes a lot of old and new country and they occasionally throw in some blues stuff and Allman Brothers type stuff. I set my radio to that station and then pulled the knobs out so nobody could change it.

I think that's why most of us hate it,no soul...the music is produced to be popular, packaged and sold....,and I think the reaon it's more popular is that R&R has changed so much nowadays that people who would be listening to rock have very little choices,so "country" songs get a little more up tempo, add a short break with buzzy guitar tones that sound more rock, and bingo,it strikes a note with people like a Southern Rock song and they like it....not me.

You've nailed the formula. Much of today's country is watered down ZZ Top on Valium. And the fake country accents drive me nuts. Occasionally I'll here one I like but most of it doesn't do anything for me.

Here's a video we did back in '87 with my favorite country singer,Billy Ray Reynolds, who was in Waylon Jenning's band all during the "outlaw" years....I should point out a couple of things, there are some fairly well known folks in this video and on the song, one favorite being "the deputy asleep in the chair",Grant Boatwright, some may have seen him playing with Neil Young in the film concert @ the Ryman a few years back, can't remember the title, and the lead player is Davis Causey, who played with Chuck Leavell in the band Sea level.....the others...just a bunch of us Nashville musicians....can't remember everybody's name so I won't try to name all.

Hey Gorgon,Re Nancy Griffith: One of my friends who was also a co-worker was in Memphis about 20 years ago to attend a conference.Anyway the conference was at the famous Peabody Hotel and that is where they also stayed. There was a very attractive lady with a fabulous voice playing in the hotel lounge and whereas he's an amateur musician with a love of country music he struck up a few conversations with her during his stay. It turned out that she had recently released a CD and of course he bought a copy of it and loved it and it was Nancy Griffith's first CD.Anyway he got her to autograph the CD and wished her luck telling her that she was destined for the big time-he was sure right about that.

Great story guitslinger and she is just incredible. The depth of feeling and emotion in her music can bring tears to my eyes and i just can't say enough good things about her. I first saw her on a music TV program here in the Uk and she played two songs "The Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness" and "Across The Great Divide" two tracks from the "Other Voices Other Rooms" album. Anyway i was so knocked out i bought the album and love it more than ever 8)

There's another track on that album "Turn Around" i think it's called and it could make a stone statue weep it's so beautiful.

An incredible artist she is. 8)

Like many on this forum, I like old country and hate new "country." Give me some Cash, Merle, Willie, George Jones, Conway Twitty, and stuff like that. I occasionally like a modern country singer like Dwight Yoakam or Lyle Lovett (who is barely country anyway.) And I like some modern alt-country bands like Son Volt and Cross Canadian Ragweed. But the new stuff makes me want to vomit. It's been said many times, but it's just bland pop music with a background fiddle or steel guitar.

Agreed. This type of song needs to die. Try bands like Reckless Kelly, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Randy Rogers Band, Wade Bowen, Stoney LaRue for a more southern-rock style country. Country music out of Texas has a totally different feel than Nashville country, it's much better.

Cross Canadian Ragweed is an Oklahoma band, formed in Stillwater. They play in the Texas scene, but technically they aren't part of it. Not sure about those other guys as I've never listened to them (although I've heard of them.)
