SA...great find, and sounds like you have a nice warm, fuzzy feeling for that guitar already! And to have possible provenaunce from our very own Brad Traweek, well that is just extra frosting on the cake!

Sounds fine too and so does the playing!

BTW, I am falling back in love with 22 frets again. Since I had made my Stratocaster and my Telecaster (both with 21 fret necks) my main guitars for playing, writing and recording for so long (as well as the producer/drummer's customized/upgraded Epiphone Les Paul Junior and a dearly departed Danelectro DC-3 Pro, both with 21 frets), I had forgotten the capabilities of that one extra little fret...

I never seemed to miss the extra fret, but since getting this Nighthawk and re-visiting the old G&L F-100 (both with 22 frets), it's a real nice change of pace....

Also, I played the Nighthawk and the Strat back-to-back, and it's amazing how different they sound. The Nighthawk sounds fatter, bigger and heavier...I still love my Strat (it ain't going anywhere soon), but it has such a comparatively brighter, lighter sound...it's definitely going to be used for the "lighter" songs of the set.

I know it has nothing to do with it, but it's funny that the jet-black Nighthawk sounds so much darker (and even more menacing) than my beautiful, bright burnt orange Fiesta Red Strat...the differences in pickups, body wood and construction really stand out, especially side-by-side.

Hello SA!

Nice herd and congrats on finding another Nighthawk, that is one nice guitar! Really enjoyed listening to your playing, as well!

I do wish I hadn't seen that picture of your Fiesta Red strat. I've got a Shell Pink '57 and am getting to think Fiesta Red would go well with it.

Oh yeah, and NICE radio! Philco is not notch and there is nothing like tuning in to the am.

Best from up north

Yes, those two colors are a nice match...my daughter (the esteemed Armadillo 'Tween) saw a shell pink Custom Shop Strat and thought it would go perfectly with my Fiesta Red and her shoelaces...I told her she had to become a much, much better player before she was getting a Custom Shop guitar...if I don't have one, she surely doesn't need one!

Thanks for the compliment on my playing...I'm my own worst critic at times and I'm never sure if something sounds good or bad. I thought the slide playing was passable and non-slide stuff I posted was horrible, but other people said it was ok...I hear all the mistakes and the sloppiness. Oh well...time to re-tube the Philco!

Hey, somehow missed this thread till now. Whoa, tasty guitar. Congrats!

Ha - you're kidding! How cool is that? Have you told him about this thread? We won't do that without your say so - but I think he should know! :D

Oh man, let's not go there! Suffice to say, many of us know what you're talking about. :(

Ahhhhh. That's my kinda medicine. Thank you for that. 8)

Now, here's something weird; 99% of the Nighthawks have ebony fretboards, including my first one. I always wondered about that one, because there were some lighter streaks through the fretboard on #1, which made it look like very dark rosewood, but it felt like ebony.
Now,  according to the serial number, the Guitars By Leo website and my fingers (the feel of the wood), this is ebony, too...but it looks so much like rosewood, it's confusing.

Hah. Well, a lot of ebony is far from the matte black we imagine it to be; sometimes very brown and streaky indeed. Some people (not you, I'm sure) don't realise that manufacturers often dye ebony fingerboards black to make them look the way we want.

Still. I'd take some convincing that yours isn't rosewood. Can't tell for sure from a photo but... (Are you seeing this, Mr The_Nutter? Food for thought.)

Congrats again, SA. And keep them sound treats coming, if you please!

Cheers - C

Maybe I looked in the wrong place, but I didn't see where to PM Brad and ask about it...if you have a way to contact him, please do, I'm very curious.

The person who brokered this sale for me (the previous owner was a Brit) is none other than Jay Wright, who authored (and sent to me) the book GAS-Living With Guitar Acquisition Syndrome...very cool guy, if you ever have a chance to interact with him.

That may be true, but doesn't mean it is any less jarring.

I agree with you fully...I'm not 100% convinced either. It feels slightly different than rosewood, though--if it makes sense that the grain "feels" different...

I can't imagine he'd be anything but interested for a headsup about this thread via that address - especially if this is indeed his old guitar!

[Typing... Clicketty-clicketty-click.] Well, now I'm up to speed on the gentleman in question I notice the Amazon page for his book has comments from at least two other people who say they've bought rare G&L guitars from him. Wow! He's obviously into his G&Ls!

Jarring indeed! About five years ago suddenly all the age lines that live on my dad's face fell through a timewarp and appeared on mine. The exact same lines. Nowadays when we're chatting I'm just looking at him and thinking; "OK, so you're me in 27 years. Oh great... :? ".

Oh well, it was never in doubt but at least now we know for SURE that we're our dads' sons, right?

Huh - C

Thank you for Brad's email address...

...and you're right about the "being sure" of paternal lineage part...I'm even getting the health problems he had at approximately the same age...if this pattern holds true, my (already aching) knee has twenty years left on it! :|

I received info that the guitar did indeed used to below to our Esteemed Web Master, Mr. Traweek, so there's one more little wrinkle to the backstory of my new baby...

Screamin' A managed to reach me about this - thanks to Ceri for pointing him in my direction. It's no tremendous secret that prior to my Fender career I was an avid collector of G&L instruments (and still am, I guess one could say - I don't buy many new ones these days but have plenty still in the stable from my prior aspirations.) Anyway, sure enough, I did indeed own that particular instrument previously! In fact I created the very website and instrument registry that led to Screamin' A's discovery way back in about 1997; some fond memories there. Very cool story here and glad it's in the hands of an appreciative owner! The Nighthawks are considered a "rarebird" model and don't come up for grabs often at all, so this is quite a nice score indeed.

That guitar's fretboard is definitely ebony, just for the record - you could certainly never tell it via these pics though! :-)

Ebony isn't the blacker than black wood it's touted as being, apparently.
Lots of people dye ebony darker than it actually is. Rosewood too. Dunno if G&L or Jackson do, Gibson certainly do.

Gaboon ebony

Believed to be the blackest wood available. Yet it's not that dark or uniform.
It undoubtedly stains up nice.
