Segovia? cool.. RESPECT.. His playing feels a bit dated now, and seems ponderous. And he always took liberties with timing. But every classical guitarist playing owes him a huge debt that could never be repaid. So saying that, I wish I had just 25% of the ability he had when he was at his peak. No way I'm qualified really to judge him, and feel guilty for doing so..

i start with 27. to this time i was prince fan but he didn't influenced me as a guitarist than more as entertainer. to this time i heard all from pop to rock.

during learning the guitar i looking more for guitar music and artists like joe satriani, steve vai, rock, metal and blues. that still goes on. no special guitarists more the music i like inspires me.

cheers :D

i started playing in 1960. my biggest influences were duane eddy, and a lot of the surf-rock instrumental bands like the ventures.

once the beatles came i was nuts about the british invasion

today- i have too many influences to name. always willing to try something new if it moves me

The fist guitarist I was impressed with was Randy Rhodes. By the time I got my first guitar I was really into Metallica, so Kirk Hammet was my muse for a long time. I also like(ed) Eddie Van Halen, Dave Mustaine, Jimmie Hendrix, SRV, Adrian Smith, and Dave Murray.

Cool thread Juan. 8)

All of the responses have a similar "first influenced by" vibe. Some listing more influences than just one, guitarist. More than one influence for me happened in this way, my cousin a guitarist, my parents gift to me of a guitar and guitar lessons, 1956, Elvis first television appearance. All happened within what seemed like only a few months when I think about that now.

Cheers :D

I too am into many of those artist you mentioned. Here in the states not many know of Bill Nelson. I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers open up for BBD back in the late 70s on The Modern Music Tour! If I ever get to go to England I would like to check out Nelsonica!

8) :D

Excellent. I saw them originally on the Modern Music and Drastic Plastic tours

Bill played a couple of tours around the UK a few years ago, in 500 - 1000 seater venues celebrating his 50th or something. "The Satellite Songs tour." He played a lengthy set of numbers from most of the Be Bop Deluxe albums and his most guitaristic stuff from his solo albums. He had a 6 piece band onboard too. Fantastic night and very emotional hearing all those classic songs: Jean Cocteau, Sister Seagull, Life in the Air Age, Crying to the Sky, Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape, Blue as a Jewel, Lovers Are Mortal, Ships in the Night, Blazing Apostles, October Man, Do You Dream in Colour.. and on & on.. they just kept coming.. One or two new songs too.

In the interval he played recordings of some improvised material while showing his (silent) home movies of himself and the rest of BBD in Juan Les Pins, France, recording the band's final "Drastic Plastic" album. Afterwards, as the sell out crowd started to thin out, he came out into venue, signing autographs, chatting and generally having a drink with the fans. An absolute gold dust of an evening for any Nelson/BBD fan. And one final (he says) chance to enjoy that phase of his career live. Easily one of the best musical nights of my life..

But I still haven't done Nelsonica!

The first classic rock album I got was Led Zeppelin IV. The first time I heard the amp warm up for Black Dog I knew I was about to hear something amazing. So at first my guitar hero was Jimmy Page because I loved that classic yet hard rock sound that Led Zeppelin had. However, as I started listening to more and more classic rock I soon discovered AC/DC. I loved the raw rock and roll sound and energy they had. Angus Young soon became and still is my guitar idol, followed closely by Page. To me Angus is more than a guitar player. He has so much energy on stage and entertains the crowd. He communicates with them and it looks like the guitar is playing him; not the other way around. He truly is a showman.

What made me want to be a musician was the beatles, still cant quite believe how many amazingly melodic songs they churned out.

What drew me to the guitar was scotty moore from elvis`s band, one of the few styles that id like to get my head round (sorry Yngwie) that i still cant quite get my head round.

What made me actually go and get a guitar and teach myself to play was jimmy page (and the my first experience of sitting down in my parents front room listening to led zep 2 on headphones, nothings really come close since for me, like your first time with a girl, or your first trip, your first - insert what was a defining moment for you here - you`ll never get that feeling back again).

To me, Page was a wonderfull mix of Scotty Moores influence and pretty much everything else i loved or would grow to love about music all contained within one mans boney fingers. Never would have discovered Bert Jansch if it wasnt for pagey. Im going to stop writing now, think you get the picture! I cant remember the last time i actually put on a zep record, but i dont need to, every second is imprinted into my brain! Id be like one of those annoying people who ruins films by constantly quoting them

Another guitar influence i had was from an older friend. I like to dedicate this thread in his memory. Renee Garcia. Great guitar player, musician and even greater human being! I still remember him playing Honky Tonk Woman in his room with his vox electric.

The guitarist that most influenced me to play guitar was my cousin. I will give his stage names though, Thad Erican during the 50's and Constant Demus during the 60's. A very hard working, hard playing, kind hearted and loving country/western guitarist/singer, may he rest in peace.
There is another guitarist that influenced the path I would follow musically soon after my cousin got me started and his name is Billy Butler, may he rest in peace.
All other guitarists that I admire, as crazy as this may read, I always considered contemporaries and in a few lucky times colleagues.

I started playing very late in life so to mention anyone as being the most influential would be impossible. There are and were so many.

My tastes have changed over the years ... I started out wanting to know how to play like Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath). Kind of funny, since a printed capital 'I' looked a lot like a lower-case 'L' on the jacked for the Paranoid album, I called him Tony Lommi for years.
