Hi, I've recently bought an American Deluxe Strat, my first electric guitar.
I've been playing classical guitar for 1 year with my fingers :S
I'm getting along pretty well with a pick but I'll be glad if you give me some (a little more than basic) song\solos so I could improve my picking.

I would suggest doing the four finger exercise using alternate picking on each note, then down and up picking on each note, then down, up, down on each note. Keep adding as you progress. Work slowly until you can do each step with no mistakes.

That exercise is so easy to change around for many different things.

Like nearly all forums it is a ranking based on post count. As your post count goes up your ranking changes. Take your time and make some quality posts and it will change.

To get good a picking you must make sure you are starting off with the correct technique. You should start by playing with the bottom of your palm resting on the bridge, as apposed to free floating your hand (which you may have been doing with finger picking). You should be able to comfortably play every string and get a clear non-muted sound from all of them. From there I would work on some 4 finger chromatic exercises and six string arpeggios up and down the neck. Make sure you get a metronome if you really want to start playing fast. Start slow and when you can play with no mistakes up the tempo about 5 bpm and do it again. It always helps to keep a record of how you are doing and setting weekly goals for tempo.

start learning some scales and chords and eorking your way around the fretboard. Alot of people who first start out with classical guitar find a difference when swithing over!! Good Luck!!

Thanks, ChetFeathers! I wondered about that! :)

Good advice on the use of guitar picks, everyone. I started out with a mix of classical and chording, and I've never regretted either one. If you can learn the classical rest stroke (alternating index and middle finger), it'll help you if you go into fingerpicking style. :D I try to teach both picks and fingerpicking to my students.
