Is there a general rule or thumb (or common configuration) for using an extension cab with a 5watt tube amp?

I want to disconnect the 8" speaker on my amp and run it through an extension cabinet but can't decide on speaker configuration. I am looking for a fuller deeper sound. So what is ideal 2x8, 1x10, 2x10, 1x12 etc?

I am currently running it through my 2 12" speakers on another combo amp I have, but wondering if the 5watt amp would benefit from a different combination.

I run my Class5 through a 4x12 occasionally. I run my Vibrochamp XD through a 2x12 and sometimes the 4x12.

I don't think there is any special combination, just what you like.

Thanks Ninja

Am I correct in presuming the 4x12 wouldn't be pushed as hard as a 2x12 configuration? Therefore, would the 2x12 be "louder"?

dj...I would think all things being equal (the amp) that the 4x12 would be louder (x amount of speaker cone of the 4x12 vs the 2x12)...others may have a more scientific way to explain this or another opinion. I have a 68 2x12 (Jensen C12Q) Sear Silvertone cab that you could try out if you like, just pm me.

Thanks Tony,

I'm currently running it through my 2x12 combo. I guess I am more curious to know how it would compare to other configurations. For example would it push a 1x12 or 2x10 harder or is it irrelevant since a 4 ohm load is that same regardless of speaker size and quantity?

Not sure if that makes sense or not.

Yeah, it makes sense for sure...but I would still think the more speaker cone surface area of a 4x12 set of speakers would therefore be louder, if the speakers were the same efficiency as say a 1x12 or 2x10 config.

I would assume that the configuration of speakers and size would make a tonal difference that may affect how you hear it too? Tens, have tighter bass, so would that make a difference in how you hear it? You pose an interesting question that I wouldn't mind knowing for sure the answer to as well.

I think my logic makes sense but can't back it up with statistics...

That's ok. 79.48% of all statistics are made up on the spot anyway.
