:? :? :?

For the convenience of our Patrons, I have attempted to translate this missive. I cannot guarantee it to be entirely accurate, as parts of the source reference are of course entirely incomprehensible:

"Ah yes, Mister 'Papawookie'.. one cannot work and talk on the internet even for a limited period of time.. A Gentleman from Glasgow, by the name of 'Celtic Cyclonus', and myself, used to have conversations in the other lounge. There weren't many other persons who could entirely comprehend the content of our conversation, which caused us to grin extravagantly despite feeling billious.. 'Alana', (who we may assume to be the subject's daughter) has suggested that you make contact with her, if, as my friend, you wish to be indelibly stamped.."

At this point my translation matrix suffered a terminal breakdown. So if anyone else can further refine this, then please do so..

  Good try Adey. You got most of it right apart from the bit at the start.

It should read "Yes Pappawookie you can't beat a small bit of our own talk/language on the net"

You think us Scots are incomprehensible what about the geordie's

I don't know what the fuss is about; Scots is easy to understand. I got every word.

...Though when my wife and I were staying near Kirkcudbright for her birthday I found myself chatting happily with the locals and only at the end of half an hour's conversation was astonished to discover I'd hired a bagpiper to play for her to mark the occasion. I had not the slightest idea that's what we'd been talking about.

He turned up that night in full regalia and looked great. Unfortunately, he was the worst piper that side of the Clyde: we begged him to stop but he played for an hour. I think he mistook our weeping for appreciation.

(All absolutely true.)

Now. The non-Scots here can have a competition to see who can pronounce Kirkcudbright...

Cheers - C

Kuk - uh - bray? :? :?:

Ceri, I'm impressed that you caught every word of that authentic piece of Scot-lish.. 8)

I hear "UK Translation Services" have an opening coming up for someone to translate steam organ service manuals from Serbo Croat to Mongolian.. Perhaps you should apply?

Something similar to a French cheese that Mr Rene Artois of the tv comedy Allo Allo was fond of.

Not saying any more and giving the game away.

Here the terms pop and soft drinks are the ones most commonly used although people in some areas of the province-especially older folks-use coke as a generic term for soft drinks, such as "What kind of coke do you want Grandpa?" "Pepsi."

We also have a drink that used to be very popular here in the spring as the tree sap began to run, that was spruce beer which as the name implies was made from the spruce tree. I don't know what parts of the tree were used but I imagine that the sap was used as well as maybe a "tea" made from steeping the needles. As you may have guessed it's an "acquired" taste but I have never been brave enough to sample it.It has a very low alcohol content of about 2% and was sold to minors too,you can still buy it in some communities.

Hi Adey: 'fraid I'm taken up with my full-time job translating South London into English for the benefit of the world.

And I have no idea what kind of bagpipes we'd all end up having to listen to if I attempted Serbo-Croat - though it might be interesting. Bagpipes in Croatian is gajde, I just happen to know.

I wonder if SuperKid feels he's getting good value from his soda thread?

Cheers - C
