I grew up in an area that said "soda."

I cringed when I later heard the term "pop."

Sometimes, if I find myself in an area that uses "pop," I will use the phrase "soda pop."

In the southern US, people have always asked for a coke. Now we say soft drink or the name of the drink.

See GTG's and Screamin Armadillo's posts. Same here in Mississippi. "You wanna coke?" "yep" "What kind?" "Mountain Dew" If you really want a coke, you just say it twice.

I have never said "I want a soda." Never. That's the first time I've ever typed it.

As for childhood pops, I was always a Dandelion and Burdock man. Every monday night the Corona pop man would deliver and we'd stock up. I steered clear of both Irn Bru and Tizer.. I never knew what was in them, but suspected that rust was involved..

If I was in a macho mood, it would be Ginger Beer. My Dad used to brew his own beer and make high quality country wines. Sometimes he'd do us some Ginger Beer, but the bottles used to explode in the middle of the night..

As for Vimto, it's not an obvious anagram for no reason..

But they were always pop to us kids - we never called them Sodas. Although you could buy something called a Cream Soda, and that was good stuff.

Wonder if Ceri remembers Cresta? ("It's frothy man..") 8) The ultimate pop.. Sadly went the same way as Cadbury's Aztec chocolate bars - still much missed..

Ha - I do remember Cresta, though only now you mention it. Cream Sodas too - do they still exist?

My wife sometimes buys Vimto, for childhood nostalgia reasons. I believe you and I share an identical opinion on that substance. So happens I recently gave myself food poisoning (apparently reheated rice is well-known for it, but no-one told me). As I crouched over the toilet bowl with writhing guts at three in the morning I got a very distinctive taste in my mouth and thought to myself: "Ew - Vimto!"

Cheers - C

Tesco and sainsburys both do one. Tesco's is better.

Has anyone ever tried Mezzomix?

Some people round here call it pop or fizzy drink in general, but in England we have this funny thing when you order drinks which is you say the name of the drink that you want when you order  We live near to an american army base here and they always give funny looks when they ask for a soda and you give them a glass of soda water :P

Also to you americans I must ask, why must you give cocktail names to mixer drinks which just have 1 spirit and a mixer, like a screwdriver. Vodka + Orange then

But honestly I still love you guys :D

Where I come from in the UK, "soda" is called either "Ginger" or "Skoosh" depending on whether street slang is being used or not. Ginger is the generic name for any fizzy drink and Skoosh is so called coz of the noise the bottle makes as the lit is unscrewed...sssssskkksssshhhhhh :D
Irn Bru is made from steel girders and is a well known remedy for an afternoon after the morning after the night before drinking headache. As the other poster has said, Tizer is rubbish now a dys as is Dandilion and Burdock Skoosh.......

It's a well known fact known by everyone in the UK aside from the medical community that Irn Bru is actually the cure to every known disease that afflicts mankind. That is a fact.
