In Australia it's all just "soft drink" or Coke, Sprite etc.
We never call it "Soda". That's what we put in our Scotch (carbonated water).

'Zactly. Same in the UK too. Where the word coke is often used as a generic to describe any brand of cola. If you asked for coke and the establishment happened to stock Pepsi and gave you that you'd think nothing of it. 7Up and similar flavoured soft drinks are generically known as lemonade. Lemonade made with real lemons is known as real lemonade. Kinda obviously.

Collectively, all of them are known as soft or fizzy drinks.

Irn Bru is the soft drink for real men (ask alanssaab). And Tizer ain't what it used to be (I'm losing you now, aren't I?).

Soda water is strictly for whisky - and only if you're not man enough to drink it neat.

And if you call someone a soda jerk he won't know what you're talking about but he'll likely punch you in the mouth just to be on the safe side. It doesn't sound polite on our ears. So take care! :D

Cheers - C

G'day Ceri, you've brought back a childhood memory. I left England when I was young. I remember I loved "Tizer". What exactly is that ?

Hiya, boxbang! It used to be great, we loved it as kids! I think it had some ingredient in it that has probably become highly illegal since - opium or some such, I expect.

Couple of years ago I found it in a shop in The North and excitedly bought a bottle, ready for a nostalgia trip. But it turns out nowadays it's just red coloured lemonade. What a disappointment! :(

It's not the real thing.

In Texas, we call everything except Dr. Pepper a "Coke".

Typical exchange overheard in a small Texas cafe:
Waitress: What do y'all want to drink?

Texan: Two Cokes and a Dr. Pepper...

Waitress: What kind of Cokes you want?

Texan: A Sprite and a Orange Crush.
(*note that neither of those drinks are Coca-Colas)

Mexicans call everything a "soda", which I don't know if that's a Tex-Mex/Spanglish word or actual Spanish word.

Sprite is a product of Coca-Cola, Inc.

Soda is a synonym for soda pop. It is neither Spanish, nor a conjugate of English or Spanish languages. It has its origins in Italian, > medieval Latin.

Soda also has traditional word usage in chemistry; i.e. sodium based compounds.

Yes we do, a bottle of ginger or a can of ginger could mean a bottle or can of any soft drink, coke, pepsi, lemonade, Irn bru. Ginger is the generic term.

To me it is pop. I never order a soda. It seems that my prefered flavor (Mountain Dew) is rarely available in other areas of the country. Everytime I ask for a Dew, I get pegged as being from Minnesota; close enough I'm actually from North Dakota.

I traveled to Russia a few years ago and wherever I went, coke was the universal term, often the only flavor and it was always flat; while the water was always carbonated. When I asked for flat water they gave me the "I can't believe you would actually drink that" look at which point I decided against it because I wasn't sure if it was safe to drink.
