I'd have to say Queen back in around 1978. Fantastic.

Robert Plant and Alisson Krauss at the Greek in LA had to be the most Unique show I've ever seen. Very Good Music!

I saw them in Nashville - and I thought it was amazing! Black Dog done semi-bluegrass with the lead break done by twin violins....

That was Great. And that traditional Gospel with Alisson singing A-Capella, then Robert and the band singign back up towards the end. The HArmonies were just great!

It can be a local act, or an arena rocker, or anything that you consider the best you ever saw. 8) For me, it was Little Feat (with Lowell George) right after they released "Waiting For Columbus." What a band with George, Payne, Clayton, Barrere, Gradney and the TOP horn section. The Allman Brothers Band (original) was a close second !

The last U.S. performance of 'Tommy' by The Who, at NYC's Metropolitan Opera House roughly thirty years ago. That was the night The Met lost her virginity. The first rock music ever performed there. Man, the grass was so thick in the air that night, all you had to do was inhale deeply. 8)

Top three:

The Police in Cleveland Ohio in 1982, with the Go-Go's opening. Huge stadium arena rock with lasers and the whole bit. I left my seat to wander around and experience it from all angles, and ended up losing a jacket with all my new wave buttons pinned to it because I'd left it on my seat, but it was worth it. I became a life-long fan of the Go-Go's that night, they are still heroes of mine.

The White Stripes at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, in I think 2004. We didn't even have seats, just SRO tickets for the foyer in the back. I felt like he played the whole history of music, out of one guitar. Transporting.

The Hives, at the Metro in Sydney also in 2004. We went to see the opening act, The Spazzys, who are from Melbourne. We hadn't heard any Hives (from Sweden) before but thought we'd stick around to see what they were like. They just exploded onto the stage, and put on one of the best shows around today. If you get a chance to see them do not miss it.

And then gigs I've been at that have been recorded for posterity include Heart at McNichols Arena in Denver, where "Unchained Melody" was recorded and later appeared on Greatest Hits/Live, and then U2 at Red Rocks in 1983 which became the Under a Blood Red Sky video - foggy and 40 degrees in the middle of June but what atmosphere, and I was in row 11.

I couldn't pick just one, and I'd have to break them into two categories ...

1) Microsoft Tech Ed events. Every year, Microsoft has a big conference for developers and IT people. The last night they sponsor a big event and in the past they have held concerts, so I have had the opportunity to see some pretty awesome groups perform in a relatively small scale setting, up close and personal. I have seen Brian Setzer & his orchestra, Blues Traveler, Robert Cray, Smashmouth, Wallflowers, and Blondie, to name a few.

2) A friend of mine was the treasurer/secretary of the stage hands union at the NJ meadowlands complex (Giants Stadium and the arena). He always asked me for computer help and in return, when they needed extra help on a job or he had extra passes he would get me in. I had the opportunity to work and/or be back stage for Van Halen (I setup Eddie's speaker cabs!), ZZ Top, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, and Elton John.

I saw YES twice in the 70's. Once for the Going for the One tour and the other was, I forget what album they were pushing, but they were "in the round" for the first time.

same shows but in boston. i believe the "in the round" tour was actually the "yessongs" collection. bruford left after "close" and alan white was with them in the round. he had that funky green drum kit.
my favorite zappa show was the sheik yerboutie tour with adrian belew. in the "baby snakes" movie, frank introduces the "i have been in you" song and mentions that it has only been performed one time previously "in boston"... that was the show i was at, and he was reading the lyrics from the same sheet of paper.
