Let me first say, I'm envious of strat58cat and anyone else who got to see SRV before he died. Now, on to the topic at hand....

I saw Leon Russell in a small biker bar called Pappy and Harriets, just outside of Yuccaipa Ca. There was maybe 100 people in the audience, it was like a personal show at a BBQ or something. He played all his hits, and a few Ray Charles tunes, as we'd just lost Ray that year. If you're not familliar with Leon, he probably wrote one of your favorite songs. Check out anything Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, or BB King put out in the early '70's, you'll see Leon in the Credits.

I guess as a historical concert......I enjoyed the last ever Beatles concert at Candlestick park in San Francisco.

I also enjoy Tommy Castro Concerts and of course.......Joe Bonnamassa. Joe Bonnamassa is one great blues player.

I saw Leon Russell on a tour shortly after the Concert for Bangladesh, and he and his whole huge band were freakin' awesome. They burned the place down.

1) Bowie at the Tower Theater, Philly 1972.

2) Nor'west Rock Festival, Stateline, ID 1976 - Day one Blue Oyster Cult; Day two -RIOT! Promoter ran off with the money, bands packed up their gear and the crowd burned the speedway down, hot wired Semi's and ran them around the track, rolled ice cream trucks down the stands - all while the state police sat back about 1/2 mile from the place and watched it happen.

I would love to have caught Leon back then, but I was only a few month old. I know it was quite a while ago, but did he do anything off of Asylum Choir?

Mindless Self Indulgence, in Darien Lake-Projekt Revolution, August 2007. They didn't have any fancy gimmicks, like lazers or fireworks or anything, but their humor and stage presence rocked out loud! :-D

Grateful Dead back around 1986 at the Irvine Amphitheatre. It was the first time I had seen them live and was totally impressed. They were a really tight band.

This was the Shelter People Band... I guess I was 15, maybe 16. I can't say whether or not they played anything from the first Asylum Choir, because the only one I knew was Asylum Choir II ("Straight Brother," "Ballad for a Soldier," etc.)

Was "Alcatraz" on the first Asylum Choir record?

That's right, I meant Asylum Choir II (You Mentioned two of my Favorite All Time Tunes). I've never seen a copy of Asylum Choir. Alcatraz was off "Leon Russell and the Shelter People", another great Album that doesn't get the recognition it deserves, and I think the Bonus track on the Asylum Choir II CD are from Asylum Choir I. They're a little playful compared to "Down on the Base" or "Salty Candy".

Well, that explains it. The Shelter People album (was that the one with the egg on the cover?) was the record this band was touring behind, and they played all that stuff, in long, rambling, gospel/rave versions that got the crowwd goin' like a Baptist church. Yowsah!

Asylum Choir II is one of the weirdest great or greatest weird records ever made. You gots-ta loin how to boogie!
