OK Ceri, have to ask,

What did you win from Fender?

I too had a prize from Guitarist magazine a few years ago.. Box of Ernie Ball SSs, not in my guage, and took months to arrive, but hey, so what?

Yeah books! you won books. But as far as guitars has anyone from this country ever won a guitar and had it shipped here?

Nikininja did.

Ok, that's good 8) so it proves then that it can be done. Why was it not done in the Coldplay situation? When that comp was started i asked if it was open to us UK folks and was told no. That makes it even worse. So what is it? What's the reason? Why were UK folks, and probably many others too, left out from that competition/giveaway.

It should be every giveaway, every competition, open to everyone fairly and equally. Can't actually see any reason why that's not the case particularly as Niki has won a guitar. :?:

I won a $300 spending spree at the online store. I chose some books (Soul of Tone, etc), some T-shirts, some polo shirts, and so on.

That was the third prize in that particular competition: first was a VG Strat won by a nice Forum user we don't see around often these days (though sometimes), Mr Giljanus, in Vermont. To the best of my memory his and Nick's are the only two guitars that have been given away on the Forum.

Also, Rhumba in Manchester won the Forum T-shirt photo competition and received a Fender HotSeat practice stool.

Cheers - C

EDIT: typo.

Because, as Brad has explained, there are different laws in different countries about how competitions in commercial companies have to be run. It is too much of a headache for Fender to comply with all the different jurisdictions out there, so most of the time they don't.

Competitions here on the Forum have been able to be an exception because Brad has done it personally, ex-commerce, so to speak. Reading between the lines we've seen that it has been a big hassle for him, he's had to package things up and post them himself rather than put them through the company mailroom; and in short it's not surprising he doesn't do it more often.

Cheers - C

Ah! well then better, in situations such as that, not to bother with that type of giveaway. You can't make fish of one and flesh of another. It's not fair in those situations to the people outwith the US who don't get a chance in that particular giveaway.

Fender is a massive company, making absolute fortunes, i'm sure they could find a way if they really wanted to. Quite obviously they can't be bothered and just say "make it a US only giveaway."

Cheers - C

The other problem you will have to deal with Gorgon is import taxes. You are still liable for them on a competition win within the UK.

It happened to me and I had a very high price accountant look into getting me out of it. Not a chance was his final verdict. So pay the bill, I did. (in my best Yoda voice)

Can you imagine the grief Fender would get if 60% of all competition wins were met with that little sting a couple of weeks after receipt of the prize.
A bunch of ungrateful whining competition winners chocking up the complaints box through no fault of Fenders own.
Even I dropped Brad an email, making him aware of what had occurred. Though it was really not my intention to whine, that I didn't blame Fender at all. That I told him more to make him aware of what had happened. As we'd seen this kind of discussion on the forums a few times. I can't help think that he could have done without the conversation. That I had in some way put upon him, or made his day a little worse. Something I really don't want to do to anyone. Except certain Persimmon and Bovis site managers.

They have no obligation to do these competitions at all. Let alone open themselves up to that grief.

Yeah i hear you Niki, it's like everything else; it's more complicated than it originally appears. As soon as something arrives in the UK from abroad if the goods are over a certain price you get these customs charges and all that kind of stuff
