Not just the Netherlands Brian, anywhere outside the USA are not usually allowed. Must be in case you win and they don't want to pay the high postage to ship the guitar to you, or whatever the prize is.

Three people in the UK have won competitions on this Forum, including me ( :D ). Fender Forum competitions have often been worldwide.

As far as Fender prizes and giveaways outside this Forum are concerned, Fender Europe has its own competitions only open to those in the EU. Brad (Forum admin) has explained that it is to do with conflicting laws about how competitions are run in different jurisdictions.

Cheers - C

Very true, Ceri, only even the European competitions are not for the entire EU, just a couple of countries.
Oh well, things will probably change in time. Meanwhile, there are plenty other competitions and giveaways out there to participate in.

Really? That's odd. There can be no legislation reason for that - it would be against the rules. So then it's just Fender's own preference. Strange.

Cheers - C

EDIT: I can't remember seeing writing that says a Fender Europe competition is only open to people in some countries and not others. How do they make that clear?

The countries allowed in are stated clearly and they're usually of Western Europe.
Not even all Schengen countries. I suspect it's not only a preference, but also has to do with the presence of a local subsidiary. Also, possibly with the willingness of that sub to get involved in a certain action/event?
The latest example is Flogging Molly's Robert Schmidt's electric mandolin giveaway, which is open to USA, Canada, Mexico, UK, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland. And these are it.

Ah yes, that's a curious list of inclusions and exclusions, to be sure. I wonder if it has to do with where Fender have distribution bases?

Mind you, that's not a Fender Europe competition, which is what I was talking about. When I get emails from Fender Europe about prizes I can't remember seeing countries specified. But then I don't know who's getting those emails and who isn't.

Cheers - C

Funny enough, I have yet to receive an email from Fender Europe. The only ones I get are the generic worldwide ones.
So I guess all actions are territory specific after all.

Ah-ha: then that's how it's being done. I bet it comes down to where they have distribution centres.

Still, as far as Brian who started this thread is concerned, as a Netherlander I expect he has friends or relatives in Germany. He could always sign up using an address there: Fender would never know.

Would that work for someone in Romania...?

Cheers - C

I guess it would, it's down to a delivery address.
Like the UK competitions, a lot of the times they're not asking for UK residency, just for an UK address. It gets more complicated when you have to send a text or something.
That's why I don't enter Guitarist/Total Guitar/Guitar Techniques competitions.
Anyway, it is a bit of bummer, but there's tons of cool giveaways out there, like the weekly HardWire, DigiTech or ProGuitar Shop's weekly pedal ones... And so on.

Hee-hee: without even trying I won a prize from Guitarist magazine too! :D

Back when he was new on the scene I sent them an email about Joe Bonamassa - and they featured it as their "letter of the month". I think I was meant to get a Godlyke pedal as a reward but month after month it didn't show up. Eventually Mick Taylor said they'd run out and sent me a DigiTech Distortion Factory, a DigiTech Chorus Factory and an EH Soul Preacher compressor instead.

Not bad for three lines of typing!

I'm sure I've seen Guitarist prizes going to people from different countries...

Cheers - C

Not bad at all. :D
Yes, Guitarist seems to be more international oriented prizes wise, Total Guitar is more UK focused in this respect.

Yeah books! you won books. But as far as guitars has anyone from this country ever won a guitar and had it shipped here?

The irony in the Coldplay giveaway was beautiful: a UK band and yet the competition is not even open to the residents of the country the band is from

Everyone should be able to enter or don't have the giveaway as it's unfair and discriminates against the folks who can't enter.

That's pretty rubbish.
