On the summer evening of 1969 when I was blessed to see the Allman Brothers live, this is the song they opened with......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTr7CMV8uSs

It'll always remain my favorite.

THANKS, DUANE!

Gregg couldn't even take the stage at The Beacon gig
recently. Rumor was that it's from 3 hernias due to the liver transplant.
Sucks watching my idols fall apart.

And,the first 4 albums were all fantastic.
"Brothers and Sisters" I could live without, even
though it produced the only big hit.

Have seen this band several times and with several
different lineups.

I saw the Bros twice with Duane, the first time was Feb '70 at Pappaliski's
here in Dayton, OH. What was so unique about Pappaliski's was that was very small venue, it only held about 100 people, I was only about 30' from Daune.

I had read about the Bros in Rolling Stone, and had brought 'The Allman Brothers Band', but I wasn't prepared for their live show, they were awesome! I wasn't playing guitar than, and was amazed by the sound he got using a small glass bottle on the strings. I don't remember Gregg playing, I think that he had the flu.

I asked him 'what' was he playing, and he told me 'slide guitar'. I had no idea what he was talking about, than. Later in '69 'Layla' was released and remember sitting with headphone on and looking at the inside album jacket and seeing Daune with EC.

Later in '71, I brought 'Live At Fillmore East', I played it to death. Than in Sept '71, they came back to Dayton, but this time at the Hara Arena, a much larger concert complex. That show was even better. Two months later Daune was gone.

My friend had given that Sear's Silvertone guitar, and I was just starting to play guitar, so I was able to understand how he was getting those tones.

After I learnt 'ear training', how to find keys to songs, I actually learnt to play blues by playing with 'Live At Fillmore East' and 'Layla' as well.

Thanks for that story about Duane,Tony,he was also the first guitar player I saw playing slide and I didn't know anything about slide except the Delta Blues style...it opened up a whole new world for me.
Duane was so fluid in his playing,it seemed effortless and whatever emotion he wanted to come out ,he made the strings express it.

Love the ABB. When I was playing minor league ball in Macon GA, I was invited to lunch at the H & H Restaurant by Red Dog. It was funny, all I wanted to talk about was the ABB, and all he wanted to talk about was baseball. I heard some amazing insider stories. If you're ever passing through Macon, you owe it to yourself a visit to Duane and Barry's graves in the Rose Hill Cemetery. It's a really beautiful place. Also, check out the H & H http://mamalouise.com/. It's the original ABB hang out, and is plastered with ABB photos. I'll never forget it.

Edit: Bummed to see Red Dog has passed away: http://boldspicynews.com/2011/02/21/joseph-red-dog-campbell-passes-the-road-most-certainly-goes-on-forever/

LanceM71,
Mama Louise's is one of my stops on every visit to Macon, along with the Rose Hill cemetery visits to Duane and Berry's graves,Little Martha's and Elizabeth Reed's graves and the mausoleum where the famous pic of the band with Berry wearing a black cape standing over the others, was made.
I really like Macon....Red Dog was a real character wasn't he! :D

One of my favorite songs of all time.

Hi tbazzone: a great song indeed.

I'm not convinced that's Derek Trucks at his very best - and even at less than 100 percent he's got to be one of the most beautiful players on the planet these days. I'm longing to see him live: what a sound he has!

Cheers - C
