Hey Forum! I found this pickup laying around and it only has DiMarzio USA under the pickup cover, no other markings. Anybody have any idea what model/series it is? If you have any insight please reply. Thanks! (Photos Linked Below)

Hi Stoetz.

Not a lot of markings on a pickup to distinguish it from any other pickup, is there? It looks just like any other singlecoil pickup.

Any chance of a DC resistance measurement? Someone could at least put you in the ballpark area as to which pickup it is.

It does look like just any ordinary single-coil, no markings, nada, zip. IMO there should be a serial/model # at least. Anyway, I don't know how I would go about doing a DC resistance measurement, because I don't own a Digital Multimeter. There wouldn't be any other way to measure it unless I installed the pickup right?

nah you need to measure it with a meter.

Pickups having no markings at all is quite normal.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but what type of meter would I use and how would I measure the DC resistance?

No worries mate, just a regular multimeter set to measure resistance. Set it somewhere in the 20K range.

PS don't bother buying a meter. You probably know an electrician or handyman that more than likely has one. Or if you have no other option than to buy one, buy a cheap one. You probably don't do the kind of stuff that requires you have a super accurate all singing all dancing thing. £5 should get you what you need.

Once the thing is set to measure in the 20K OHM (Greek Omega letter) range simply touch one probe to the exposed part of the white wire and the other probe to the exposed part of the black wire. That will give you a reading on the LCD.
This is a Vintage Noiseless pickup I'm measuring here. From it's reading of 9.8K Ohm I know it's the middle pickup, not the lower powered neck pickup.

Hope some of that helps.

If it measures ~11K Ohms, it could be a Fat Strat (FS-1). Not a real old one, though.

Weren't the older ones at around 14/15K?

I ask because my soon to be acquired acquisition requires a 70's FS1 to be perfect. A very kind gent gave me a SD Quarterpounder that has been awaiting a time like this. I'm wondering on similarities between the two. Wasnt the Quarterpounder Seymours answer to the FS1?

Thanks mate! :D When I go into work tomorrow i'll ask if I can borrow my boss' multimeter! Sorry I didn't know what meter you were talking about, I should've known it was a multimeter! I just wasn't thinking. I'll post results back on this topic to see where we can go from there. Thanks again! You have been alot of help!

The numbers are swirling around in my brain! Luckily, I had some measurements written down.

Yes, the one '70s FS-1 I have (it's in my doubleneck right now) is 14K ohms (and a whopping 15.35 H inductance). A half dozen SDS-1's I have range from 8.2 to 9.2K ohms (9.56 to 9.67 H inductance).

Yes, I believe that the Quarterpounder was S.D.'s version. My question is: wasn't the FS-1 DiMarzio's first major single coil product? (The Super Distortion Humbucker was their first humbucker, I believe.)

Yep, thats the info that I've seen this last week. I've been looking.
The fella who first showed me how to play and helped me pick my first guitar had a Strat he'd built himself with a FS1 in the neck position. As far as I remember it had hex key adjusters for polepieces like the Super Distortion had on one side of the pickup.

You are correct. The "FS" is for, "Fat Strat", the "1" is for the first model of this type.

As to what the OP's pickup is, to me it looks like an OEM model for possibly and Ibanez or an EBMM.

Alright, I just got back from work and I have the readings. The pickup measured 14.45K - 14.55K Ω sometimes maybe even closer to 15K Ω. Just like nikininja said,

So, is it possible it could be an F-S1? Any ideas? This is getting interesting! :D

Absolutely it's an FS1, FS2 or as Martain said (far more expert that I, and knows Dimarzio inside out), it's an equivalent made for one of the Ibanez or Music Man guitars by Dimarzio.

Jealous, I need one. If you auction it, let me know.
