Yah it's me again,

What do you set up for a wireless guitar? You attach an antenna to the guitar right and a transmitter of some kind between the guitar and the amp?

This seems a more pleasant way to play the guitar without being bothered by the cord. But is it expensive and will it work with all amps and can you buy it from guitar stores? I've not purchased an amp as yet and want to make sure its compatible for wireless etc. That is if it can be done without having to pay big time for it.

Thanks for your help guys,

Harry

You essentially have it right. You need a wireless system ,they range in price from a hundred bucks into hundreds of bucks .Here's a few examples of what your looking for.

The transmitter plugs into the guitar. The receiver sits atop the amp, or at the start of the pedal board (like mine).

You'll need good batteries (Duracell. Eveready if nothing else is available) in seemingly limitless supply. Rechargables are just not good enough at all. You'll need to change the batteries in the transmitter every 4/5 hours. So don't bother with the thing for practice.

+1 on the batteries! Always carry spares and don't figure the battery from last night is going to make it through the second night! For me, it seems even the better systems still eat up those batteries.

You guys are the best and I can't thank you enough for the information...

I think from your information I'll stick with being connected to the cord. Looking at prices of the transmitters etc I have the feeling a cheap one is likely to give cheap results. I was also surprised how they go through batteries!

I ordered the "Fender Mustang I" and from what I read it's a great beginners amp and I look forward to receiving it. My initial master plan was to play through my Mac using GarageBand but try as I may I could not figure out how to hook the guitar up to the Mac. It's most likely working out for the best because my 7 year old granddaughter said, "I think you'd look great with an amp, its pretty cool looking Pop-Pop"! Of course she then followed that statement up with "does the amp make noise like the guitar does"? :) So I'm not sure how much we can trust her ideas, but I am getting the amp so I guess she does! :D

Thanks guys, oh and Happy Easter,

Harry

Harry get a cord! Your young adviser is right.

In truth wireless systems are nice if you're an extrovert performer and are playing decent sized venues. I used to do a solo one handed whilst I went to the bar, downed a pint and went back to the stage.
Frivolous nonsense really.

When you want one for the right reasons, you can get a decent one cheap enough. Their not like they used to be. When anything under £800 would sound rubbish. I got mine for £200 and it's ok. Nice and clear, good range, no interference. A lot of it is how you set em up with the volume and squelch controls on the thing. It takes a bit of swapping comparing and fiddling between the wireless system and cord. But like I say, you can get good results.

Hey Nikininja,

Thanks for your reply and I think that's absolutely right... I'll stay connected to the cord and as my playing ability increases maybe at that time look for possible alternatives and spend some time researching what's out there.

As always I thank everyone for your excellent help,

Harry

I would never want to play without a wireless. I have a Samson unit that I paid around $300 for 12-13 years ago and it's performed like a champ. Of course, in our band situation we are 3 pc and singer and I run the PA from the stage so I need to be able to walk out in front of the mains from time to time to just be sure we're running ok. Not to mention no cord to trip over on stage!

Of course the one thing to be sure of is that it's "true diversity" or it has two antennas to receive the sound from your guitar. They are great because if your signal fades on one antenna the other takes over, like if you walk across the stage. And mine also has a "mute" circuit built in so if I turn off the transmitter the reciever doesn't blast noise into the amp.

And mine is awesome on batteries, even with cheap 9 volt'ers in it I can get 8-10 hours of normal playing. I don't why it's so long but I'm not complaining, batteries aren't cheap.
