Hey guys, I'm feeling a little sheepish as I should probably know this but am finding it really hard to find any real info online.

Have recently started an acoustic covers band here in Aberdeen and we are starting to get a few gigs here and there but for many of the venues now they ask for an online presence over even a demo cd and am trying to find a music site that 'allows' cover songs..........we have a Facebook page and I can't seem to find any player that they are linked with that will allow cover material....

Is there any? Or is it really just a case of no chance due to copyright?

Any advice would be appreciated from my Fender brothers and sisters...

CHeers

Evan

Youtube is always good. If you want you can just use a piece of artwork for the video like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeAQfyI7cQo

Or you can even use Bandmix. They're pretty loose about it there. People put up covers all the time.

When you make a profile, just mark "no" in the "currently seeking musicians" category. You can use it as a quick link for venues to check you out.

Far as copyright is concerned, my understanding is that Youtube was forced (reluctantly) to come to terms with the performing rights people over what had previously been their massive abuse of copyrighted material. So nowadays if you post a cover there a derisory fee finds its way eventually to the song's owner. Presumably the other hosting sites have similar arrangements - or they'd find themselves with their backsides dragged through the courts. (Worth bearing in mind if people think of hosting copyrighted material on a website of their own.)

I've a feeling you'll find that even if you get thousands of views you aren't allowed to benefit from Youtube's advertising revenue stream in the way you can if you are the owner of the material in your vid. That relates to the same issue.

Somewhere amongst these sites' terms & conditions there must be clauses concerning copyright. Damned if I know where to look for it on Youtube, though. But then I'm not uploading covers, so...

Anyhow. We'd love some links when you have something to share, pappa! :D

Cheers - C

If you are manufacturing and distributing copies of a song which you did not write, and you have not already reached an agreement with the song's publisher, you need to obtain a mechanical license. This is required under U.S. Copyright Law, regardless of whether or not you are selling the copies that you made. (very cheap from Harry Fox Agency!)

You do not need a mechanical license if you are recording and distributing a song you wrote yourself, or if the song is in the public domain. If you are not sure if the song you are looking to license is in the public domain, and therefore does not require license authority, I suggest you use the search on www.pdinfo.com.
