George Harrison was a creative force in the Beatles; not as much a creative force as Lennon and McCartney, but still someone who contributed to their amazing, transformative body of music in a significant way. He was also unusually interested (for a westerner) in eastern mysticism; but was not without his attachments to aspects of the material world. The man's life is told, through old and new interviews with himself and his friends, and archive footage (of which there is plenty), in Martin Scorcese's film.

Check it out here (with rare footage) :

edited to add = the link for part 2 is on there too and it's a total of FOUR hours!!! :!:

Ha! I was watching this film on the BBC just the other night. It is very cool indeed: any Beatles fans out there must not miss it!

BTW: I never can get over just how much of George you can see in his son. Given how tough it must be to be the kid of anyone so famous, George seemed to manage the parenting thing quite a bit better than John. Dhani comes over as really nice and balanced in that movie.

Cheers - C

Hearing Olivia talk about the break-in/beatings and George's heroics and
then the final hours of his life, with Ringo getting emotional is done
so well, that it's like you were there.

George : Was I a good husband?
Olivia : Was I an OK wife?

etc...

You come out of that film just plain liking many of those people, don't you?

And that sure as heck ain't always the way with rockumentaries.

Oh, another thing. Though I've seen most or all of them, I still hadn't quite counted up just how many really good films George's movie company (Handmade Films) was responsible for before it went TU. Yet another fine feather in the man's cap, and another fascinating aspect of Scorsese's flick.

Cheers - C

I read the book 3 times, and was kinda distracted by the British lingo and really dident get the full prospective of the story untill now. The film Brought the whole thing together for me. It's a powerful story, and a wonderful way to spend an evening. Thanks for sharing the link with us.

I'm probably the only one that was a bit disappointed with the Scorcese doc. As a huge Beatles/ George fan I found nothing new or insightful in the film. Everything included has been written about and discussed in numerous books and documentaries.

I was excited when I heard Marty would be the one doing it and figured he would approach George's story from a different angle. Pretty much the same old same old if you were a fan of the man.

If you weren't familiar with George's career after the Beatles or were just a casual fan it's a good place to start.

I myself prefer the "Concert for George" as the music and performances show a true love for George and his influence on all of them.

HBO presented the movie here back in November I think it was...I got a copy off of a friend's DVR and have been waiting for the US release.

Scorsese said it would come out in February, then said March and I see AMAZON says May 1 for the DVD.

In other news...James McCartney (son of Paul) says he and Danni and Sean Ono Lennon have talked about forming a group...word has it Zak ( Ringo's son ) was also asked but was not interested at the time, according to James.

Why they would want to do this is beyond me. Well, outside of the $$ that is.

I just caught this the other night on cable and loved it...yeah not much new info, but always good to see his friends talking about him and the good times they had. And to be honest, always felt George had the best solo career of the bunch, Paul was more famous, but he had a TON of filler on his albums!

And someone mentioned here that George seemed to do a better job parenting, and I would have to agree with that.

To my ears Paul's songs were always more inclined to be pop songs and his main objective was to sell as many records as he could.John's songs were usually more brooding and introspective and painfully frank and honest.George's songs were often very spiritual in nature and you couldn't help but feel that the lyrics were coming from the depths of his soul.I think that the main things that drew me to George were his humility, spirituality and quiet reverence.
