I have been doing searches for 2 months looking for GC's KOTB 2012 contest. I thought they did away with it. I knew signups should of started April 1.

I was just on GC's site and scrolled to the bottom and clicked on events. To my surprise, it is now called Battle of the Blues. Why the change? Anyways, as soon as I get off of this night shift, I'm gonna sign up for it. Is there anybody else here signing up for it also? I'm gonna be playing at one of the GC's in Houston, TX. Hopefully there will still be spots open next weekend. My night shift should end either Monday or Tuesday next week. Maybe I'll take my transition day and go sign up. If my memory serves me right, there was a female member here on the forum that played at this contest last year in the Houston area. Don't remember who she was though. Hope to see some of ya'll there. I'll be there with my Transparent Teal American Deluxe Strat ripping it up! :D

I like the new name better. It was a bit presumptuous to call the winner of a guitar-karaoke contest the "King of the Blues".

I've entered a couple times. They had extra spots open both times so I didn't feel guilty about displacing someone who might have actually had a shot at winning. It was fun; I might check the week before the performances start to see if they need a middle aged mediocre suburban "bluesman" to pad the show.

She's good. I need to get out more. I miss going out to the open jams and just going out to check out the local blues scene. She's seems very learned of the blues, especially considering her age.

Thanks. :) And yes, the local blues scene here in Houston is really great in comparison to some other cities I've played in. You should get involved, just look up the Houston Blues Society. They usually sponsor all sorts of blues related events and keep a calendar posted of upcoming shows worth checking out.

As for the Guitar Center thing, I'm signed up again this year. I can't believe how far I've come since my first time out around three and a half years ago. I think I can finally let go and have fun now, while the first time I couldn't even look at the audience.

Which Guitar Center are playing at? I'm gonna try to get to the Clear Lake store sometime next week. I hope they don't get filled up before I can get there. If so, there are still two more stores, or three if you count the new one in Sugarland. But, I really don't want to drive that far!

You said in another post that you work at a music store. Which one, if I may ask?

I was in the process of moving when the last one was held, plus I was starting a new position at work. Since this contest is held on Thursdays, I didn't want anything getting in the way of work. Now that I've had this position for a while, it would be no problem taking a day off to attend.

It means that the vast majority of entrants shall attempt to play, dress and gesticulate like SRV, all to varying degrees rather than do their own thing.

I apologize Martian. I've been working nights for over 2 months, and I guess I kinda got up on the wrong side of the bed today. I first thought that you were saying "I" was a SRVabee. Now I understand where you are coming from. SRV is the newest bluesman to make such an impact in the blues music industry. He single handedly brought blues to mainstream. That's why so many people sound like him. But, I'm sure you knew that already.

There was a point when I was told that I sounded like an SRV clone. I had to work hard to lose those SRV traits. Didn't listen to him for years, but some of those licks are still there. I guess I'll see how many "SRVabees" sign up.

Don't know why, but that just made me bust out laughing. Probably because I know people who enjoy making those kinds of faces on stage. It's one thing if it's natural and you don't notice you're doing it, but I think some guys must practice in the mirror before a gig or something...
