Hi Folks,I'm posting this as some forum members are on my email list.Someone has hacked into my account or is just using my email address and sending people emails purportedly from me.So if you receive any emails that appear to be from me don't open them in case they contain a virus or worm.Derek.

Hi Derek: yeah, after 15 years with the same email address it happened to me for the first time a few months ago too. A royal pain in the backside, and also deeply embarrassing, as people start sending you emails saying; "huh?"

No matter how hard you try to explain that you've taken all precautions and done nothing wrong, people kinda assume it's your fault as spam email starts arriving in their inbox.

I cordially loath hackers! (Well, not very cordially...)

Cheers - C

Yeah, but you shouldn't have tried to explain it by saying, "I really don't know what happened guys, I must have gotten it by sitting on a toilet!"

Oh wait, you're talking about a computer virus! Never mind...

Hee-hee!

No, it wasn't quite like that. But what I did find myself having to tell people was the emails offering medication and surgical "enhancements" to the male anatomy did not come from me.

Which was bad enough.

Obviously, nobody thought I was selling medical enhancements. But it was perfectly clear how one or two people presumed the spammer must have got hold of my email address... "Guys, I've been hacked." "Yeah, yeah..."

:?

It happens to all of us at some point. The clue was seeing the
"no subject line" and a link (that I didn't click on).

Just change your password and you should be fine.

Yeah, you were on the receiving end of mine, weren't you? Again, apologies!

And do that from a different computer, was very good advice I received. Just in case it is not the email account that has been hacked, but your own computer. With a keystroke collecting program or similar.

Again, I'd like to meet these people face to face...

Ceri had to send out some 'intimate pictures' as prove he didn't use aforementioned products, or at the very least that they didn't work!!

You need to do a full virus scan Derek. It is more likely you have some nefarious program on your computer.

there is also the possibility that someone else you know is infected and that their computer is sending out emails and spoofing names from their address book.

situations like this are huge incentive to stop using email clients like outlook and switch to a web-based mail server like gmail.

Truly horrible thing to do to anyone and these idiots ought to be strung up. I think i've got a worm or something on my PC as it hasn't been working optimally for ages. The problem is the security suite i have doesn't show anything wrong, no viruses or anything showing. So if it doesn't show up there what can you do?

Also over here there's been a string of people who phone people up and say they're calling from "Windows support" or something like that and they tell you that you have something seriously wrong with your PC and it needs to be fixed urgently!!!

Anyway it happened to me when i got all these symptoms and the guy said they could fix it remotely but i had to follow the steps and turn control of my PC over to them!!! I started the procedure but knew in my heart of hearts it was a scam. So then i aborted the procedure and said "where are you calling from?" and all this stuff.

It's happened to a lot of people here.

My question is: is it possible to have something burrowed in the background that your security is not picking up? what do you do about it?

And now I have to wash the spluttered tea off my computer screen. Huh.

Cheers - C

PS: I abandoned Outlook for webmail a long time ago. Didn't save me...

Thanks for the suggestions guys,I've been in contact with Blinkers as he's the computer programmer/IT expert for a large group of companies here and he's coming down this evening to purge the computer or even flatten it.Anyway he told me to change my password, which I did.So it should be straightened out this evening.

no, it doesn't guarantee safety, but it adds an extra level of security.

Gorgon all your security suite can do is look for already identified bad code. There is constantly new stuff it won't identify, and there are some malicious programs that can bury themselves and be hard to find even once they are known, and some that even disable your security software, to ignore them.

Safe surfing and a hardware firewall are your best defenses.

Hope all works out well for you Derek. I've been hanging around in the Forums for almost our years, occasionally, I'd get a bunch of those types of e-mails, usually they went straight to spam. I use Firefox as my browser.

Thanks Twelvebar, what was happening was i was getting a security warning flashing up on my screen from McAfee saying there were problems with the computer. Anyway they said i had real time scanning turned off when i never turned it off. Anyway when i then try to turn it on it won't respond. It must be a scam, fake, pop up though because when i turn the PC off and start it up again and check the security suite it says everything's in order!!!

Also it crashes now and then too. Once it totally crashed and i didn't have the recovery discs to get it back and i had to get a tech guy to fix it

I changed browsers recently to see if that helped and i don't get the security pop up happening anymore but the slowness in response indicates to me there's something not 100% right. A lot of times i click on things and there's a big delay

This is what annoys me i thought that's what i was paying a security suite for; to stop this kind of crap happening
