Neither one of you are slouches, are ya? 8)

Excellent playing, and I am doubly impressed with the your (plural) ability to play ABB on Strats! I can't find a single thing wrong with the entire presentation.

Excellent.

BTW, you don't look nearly as old as I imagined...there's some kind of left-handed compliment in that statement!

Thanks SA!...I was going to send you a message soon if you didn't show up....yep,playing the ABB on Fender gear is a surpise to some,it's our take on everything we do,some bands I've been in tried hard to get as close to the original sound as possible,on every copy song we did, this band...we just go for it and put our stamp on the song,I wish I could sound like Duane, but I never could even with my Les Paul.
:D

Very well played and tight, great cover of a great song. You must be proud that your son is a chip off the old block RS,he has a really good strong voice and stays on key, which is rare these days...lol. The group as a whole plays very well together and each member is a good musician is his own right and that's really all you need to do well. Please post more videos if you have them.Cheers.

Thanks so much guitslinger!
Yep,I'm really proud of him,he just gets better all the time and we have a great time together, really all of us,the drummer's dad was a fairly well known drummer in Nashville and he started playing when he was just a little kid,the bass player is the least experienced but he wants to learn everything we throw at him...they're some great guys and absolutely no big ego problems, after all these years of putting up with the crap we musicians have to from band members,I feel truly blessed to have finally gotten in with these guys.
There will be more vids to come when the camera man get's them on youtube. :D

I don't know why I'm so surprised that you play Allmans on Fenders; I've been preaching for years that the tone is in the hands, and here I am falling into the same ridiculous thinking that you gotta use Guitar Y with Amp X to get Sound Z.

The best example I ever saw that shows it's how you play rather than what gear you play was this:
In the earliest incarnation of the Screamin' Armadillos, the other guitarist and I would switch guitars in the middle of an instrumental I wrote called "Travis County Line."
I (usually) played my Telecaster with a Leslie simulator and a Tube Screamer into my '63 reissue Vibroverb, he always played his G&L F-100 through a distorted Roland JC-120...totally different rigs, totally different sounds.
When we would switch guitars--rigs and all--during that song, however, I still sounded like me while he still sounded like himself. Yes, the "sound" (especially considering the different effects we were using) was different, but the tonal quality that made you think, "That's Matt playing," or "That's Jon playing," was still there.

I saw a guy absolutely nail SRV's tone with a PRS axe through a Vox amp; then, without touching a knob or switch, he did a very impressive Eric Clapton rendition; he had figured out how to use the dynamics of his playing to imitate/emulate/copy other people's trademark tone.

I just figure y'all learned the same with ABB's stuff...and I'm very impressed.

I think that is excellent. The Allmans are not the easiest band to play. The music is "just blues" but the arrangements, jams and relationships between instrumentals are tough. Its just hard to "sound like" the Allmans, but you guys did very well.

Put up some more links, please. I'd like to watch more.

I'll put some more videos up as soon as the guy who filmed it gets them on youtube, thanks very much for the compliments! :D
Yeah, the ABB is a hard band to copy without the keyboards and two drummers because their sound has always been so full...you come off sounding thin if you try to play some of the twin guitar parts without the rythym, that's why one of us usually plays full sounding chords in key parts of the song where the organ is prominent....and then there's Gregg's vocals!
People like it though, and we pull off more ABB songs than any other.

You've said such interesting stuff about Elizabeth Reed in the past. I'd just love to hear you play that one. Oh wow.

...Are you taking requests? :D

Cheers - C

I love the song Elizabeth Reed,we haven't done that one yet,but I'm sure we'll do it or Hot'Lanta one day soon...the funny thing is that we don't practice, the bass player and my son get together on Sunday sometimes, and then the drummer gets a quick run through sometime or another and then I get up there and if it's a song I've heard or not,I get the key and what the chords are and then I wing it.
The Allman Bros. songs are my old standbys,I've played them forever...my son said that this drummer was the first one he went through the timing with who understood it the first time around....and didn't go...huh?
We had not played together for a month when this show came around, the next week we burned it up....that's the one I wish we had video of.

Rebel I couldn't get the link to work for me but I found it on YouTube. All I can say is who needs an organ when ya'll play. Well done... I love me some ABB and if I'm in Tennessee and you serve up some Blue Sky and a girl named Jessica I will jump in and jam with ya.

Seriously your son inherited some good genes. Great job playing and singing. Thanks for posting that and post some more. :D

Absolutely Great!

But the bass player needs to be standing where you're standing. You should be standing where your son is standing. And your son (who is truly a great singer) needs to be standing where the bass player is standing.

Thanks!!
tdanb2003...Blue Sky is an absolute favorite of mine, that song and Jessica are classics, there are a couple of recordings of the original ABB with Duane soloing on Blue Sky,he sounds fantastic as usual...you can probably find that on youtube, and the website Hittin' The Note has one of the shows on CD,I can't remember where it was...I would be happy to jam with you if you're ever in the area. :D
ChrisNJ... yeah we always seem to change around onstage, but my son likes to be on that side and I'm usually centerstage, that night the bass rig that belongs to the house happened to be on that side so that's why the bass player is center.
I don't know why,but over the years it has become natural for me and my son to line up that way,I guess because years ago I turned over the singing to him and he was always on my left....seems the thing to do. :D
