Hi folks,

I had decided on the Squier Black & Chrome Fat Strat but I've been reading a lot about the Squier Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar with the 2 humbuckers (neck/bridge). I do not have a Fender dealer close to me, (closest is 80 miles) and they don't have either of these guitars so I'm unable to try them on my own. I'm a beginner so I probably wouldn't know what I had in my hands anyway.

So I'm coming to you guys for some guidance. I want to play classic rock in the style of John Fogerty and I want to play lead guitar. That said, what guitar do you think would be best for me the Fat Strat or the Custom with the two humbuckers? Another thing I noticed watching John Fogerty in concert is the guitars he played the most had 2 humbuckers.

I'd like to know the difference as far as;
• sound,
• playability
• easier to play
• one more forgiving than the other?

Thanks for your help,

Harry

To be honest, since you're a new player, it doesn't really matter which one you choose. Whichever one you get (if it's set up correctly) will be your first reference as to how a specific guitar sounds, feels and plays.

It's unfortunate that you don't have a dealer close by, because it's hard for me to say "X is better than Y" because the feel of an instrument is a highly personal thing.

If I were to be forced to choose, a Strat is usually a more comfortable guitar...but that doesn't mean a Tele is uncomfortable--once again, "feel" is a highly personal thing. I own both and play both regularly.

So now that I haven't helped you at all, I would just like to say, "Welcome to the Forum!"

Hey Screamin’ Armadillo,

I don’t know why you’d say “So now that I haven’t helped you at all”! If I can paraphrase your remarks, what I got from it is “If you’re going to play a guitar, go ahead”… :D

I'm reminded of a conversation I had with a friends wife awhile ago when she told me on their first date she had to slap him three times. I said “what did he do, try to get fresh or steel a kiss or something" and she said “Oh No, I thought the boy was dead”! :)

2939 posts and this is all the screamin I get? :) Great post and I appreciate it!

Thanks for your good wishes, it’s good to be here,

Harry

Harry, while I have not played the Tele, I can vouch for the versatility of the Fat Strat. Along with my Marshall, the resulting tones run the spectrum from crystal clear single coil cleans or even surfer twangs to thick and chunky humbucker power chords... and screeching solos... the Fat Strat plays 'em all!

Hey RipperSB and thanks for the shout,

I've been doing all kinds of Google searches looking for an answers and believe I came up with the same answer you've given me and that's the "Fat Strat"! There was one article I felt was especially excellent on this subject that I'd like to share it with everyone and get your reaction. Here's the address.

http://reviews.ebay.com/Electric-Guitar ... 0003008231

I tried to copy and paste it here but the graphics did not come over with it and I felt if there are other new-bees like me they may like to see it graphics and all. And as I said I'd love to get feedback from you the experts and secure any other thoughts you may have... Its a topic I for one would like to know as much about as I can. I want to lean to play the guitar but I also want to know what I'm playing and what's out there. As they say "knowledge is power"! Power to "Rock-on-Dood"! Did I really say Dood? :D

You guys are the best,

Harry

Welcome Harry! I have a Standard Squier Strat and and Squier Custom II only mine has the P90s. I actually had the Tele before the Strat and am glad I did at first anyway. The main reason is this that if you never had a guitar with a tremolo they "can be" a little frustrating especially if you try to float the tremolo like I did. I now just deck mine the reasons being (a.) I hardly ever use it and (b.) they are pretty hard to keep in tune.
The Tele on the other hand is a hardtail and stays in tune better than the Strat even decked. I haven't tried the Custom with the Hummbuckers but the reason I chose the Custom II with the P90s they have slight better reviews and I love mine.

My point is the hardtail will give you more practice time vs the tremolo Strat. Hostely if you stick with guitar playing you will want both plus maybe 10 more models.

Practice and most importantly HAVE FUN!

Hey jaknzax,

First let me thank you for your post. I think if I've learned nothing else its that just having one guitar long term is almost unheard of. That's great because it means the better you get the more you want a guitar that best fits that specific need.

I had mentioned in another thread when I was watching John Fogerty "The long road back" concert that he changed guitars many times as did his accompanying guitarists. I look forward to the time I'm good enough that I'll want another guitar or two or five to match the style I want to play and how I want it to sound (sound for tune specific)...

You had mentioned the "tremolo" and frankly I don't think I'll even put the bar on my guitar. As a beginner I have no need for it and from what I've read its one of the primary things to get your guitar out of tune. So I think, at least initially, the tremolo has got to go! Hey a limerick...

Thanks again for your post,

Harry

Good luck with your choice, both are fine instruments for the money.

A lot of good things in there but the best piece of advice I saw was go to your music store and play everything and decide which sound you like. As far as the trem goes, I took the arm off the Strat but that was all (no decking) and have not had a problem with it staying in tune. Cheers!

Hi Hobbyist,

Yes, that's just what I was thinking, I'll just not put the arm on the guitar! I can save the "wah-wah's" for later! I think I'll need to save the "wah-wah's" until my fingers heal... :)

Thanks,

Harry

why even float it if your not even going to use it?
