I notice this forum uses a ton of them, MIA, MIM, DRRI, CAR, NOS, etc, etc.

When I first visited this forum it took me a while to figure out what some of these acronyms were. Has it ever been suggested to make a sticky of the common acronyms used? I think this would help a newbie to the forum get a grasp of the lingo a lot quicker.

List of acronyms (work in progress):

AVRI - American Vintage Reissue
DDRI - Deluxe Reverb Reissue
GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome
MIA - Made in America
MIJ - Made in Japan
MIM - Made in Mexico
NGD - New Guitar Day
NPD - New Pedal Day
NOS - New Old Stock
OHSC - Original Hardshell Case
R6-1956 reissue
R8- 1958 reissue
R0- 1960 reissue
VOS- A new guitar made to look real old

Hi S197: you are right, and indeed it has occasionally been suggested for a sticky - and as you see that has never happened.

On the plus side, I've often seen people ask what these acronyms mean and I don't ever remember anyone laughing at them for not knowing. People just give the answer helpfully, usually followed by a whole lot more...!

CS, MIC, MIK, MIJ, CIJ, AVRI, VHR, TDlx, AmStd, BJIII, etc etc etc.

OMG, I feel faint!

Cheers - C

IMHO a code key is no BFD to make but the trick is keeping it P1. Sure, I could make a code key to post my website but who would bother to look there? Besides I tend to over-complicate things and it might be a real PITA to some people. When my site goes 404, which it eventually will since all things eventually end, people would be lost yet again and that would torment my spirit through eternity, but maybe that is just TMI. I think most of the abbreviations are fairly well known, but if it is a lesser known one like "PIO" then you just might be SOL. So I'm sitting here asking myself, WWJD?

IMHO=In my humble opinion
BFD=Big freakin' deal
P1=Page 1
PITA=Pain in the agathis
404=Webpage error
TMI = Totally meaningless information
PIO=Paper in oil
SOL= So outta luck
WWJD=What would Jamerson do?

(As you see in the above illustration, acronyms might have a totally different meaning than you think! Perhaps it would be the best thing if everyone just said what they meant instead of using acronyms in the first place. Ten-Four?)

I thought TMI meant Too Much Information, as in somebody sharing information that noone likes to hear, for example bowel movements.

Yeah that would be nice but it's not really something that can be controlled. Most acronyms used here seem to be standardized. I think common acronyms that you list can be slightly changed but most of the acronyms used here are related to Fender, for instance I'm pretty sure DRRI has only one meaning in the context of this forum.

Anyway, I just thought compiling a list might make it easier on people joining the forum. I'd be happy to update the original post with acronyms if people want to contribute but it sounds like this has been discussed before.

Here is what I've learned so far.
NGD = New Guitar Day
NPD = New Pedal Day
GAS = don't remember exact wording but you get GAS everytime you really want to buy a new gear.

Droolsome Righteously Red Instrument - is that it? That's certainly what I've always assumed, anyhow.

This could be helpful.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV. :D

Appreciate your contributions! I updated the OP to start a list. Anyone else feel free to post here and I'll update so we can have one list (I'll try to keep in alpha order so it's easy to locate an acronym if the list starts to get really long).

Much more financially crippling than GAS. :wink:
