Mother of Pearl is nothing more than a blend of minerals known as Iridescent Nacre. This material is secreted by a Mollusk to protect the inside of it's shell. It's also the same substance that Pearls are made of. I have always wondered just how the inlay was done, thought some of you might like to see it happen before your eyes. I thought it was very cool. 8)

Took this pic this past Saturday. Guess what was the first thing to hit my mind when I saw this? :D

I don't know man, with that plate full of oysters I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to think of much else other than eating. Then maybe what I might do with the shells.

----Danny,

Lol the picture didn't capture it but when the server put te plate on the table, the lighting was perfect from where I was sitting. I was like ooooh mother of pearl! :D

Then I got hungry. They were amazing, I think those were from Washington. Oh yeah abalone was not the only unlucky sea creature that night hahaha! Nor was my wallet, yikes!

Are those Abalone? I mistook them for oysters. It is currently illegal to harvest Abalone in Washington Waters. Because of commercial fishing they are virtually extinct, and there is no plan to reestablish the species. What a shame. But Oysters are another thing all togather, and some of the finest in the world come from a small bay about 50 miles from my house, there known as Quilcene, Oysters and are frequently seen on the menu in fine restaurants around the world. There is nothing like a fresh raw oyster, slurped off the half shell chased by a shooter of Tequila. 8)

You're right those are oysters. I got confused because I did eat abalone that night. Here it is on the top right.

I've dabbled with shell inlays, mainly just picks. That video makes it look easier than it is.
It's literally a matter of cutting the hole exactly the same as the inlay, but practice makes
perfect I guess. Ebony is the best wood to use. You can hide mistakes with a dust/epoxy mix. Here's some of my work.

Mr Bean was the perfect guy for that one. There's nothing quite as bad as a BAD Oyster. There's one thing about Raw Oysters, You either love them, or you hate them.

...Unfortunately, there's one or two very tricky stages missing from that vid.

BTW: boxbang, you did those great posts about pearl inlay in the Strat Forum. Care to link to them, so's people can better admire your work? Very impressive.

Meanwhile. I'm loving the seafood on this thread. Yum-yum! :D

Cheers - C
