Is it possible for the neck inlay dots to be changed?
I have the Black MOP in mine and I have this thing that they should be Abalone.
I just love the look of the multi-colour of the Abalone. At least it would be different!

New dot inlays are cheap -- maybe $10 or $12 per dozen at Warmoth, but getting the old ones out without damaging the fretboard is the tricky part. Unless you're really good with tools, I'd find a luthier willing to do the job for you . . . but a new neck might actually be cheaper.

Hiya,

Before you decide to go crazy on your neck, perhaps check this sort of stuff out. I've seen it on guitar necks and it looks convincing and feels real. I am not sure however if dot markers exist as well. These seem kinda flashy ;-)

Hope it helps -

Nutter

Edit: Silly me forgot to add the link. Her'ya go:

And they have dot markes. I checked. 8)

As my Luthier tells me, "Applying heat" loosens all adhesives. Since all fret markers are held in the fret baord by glue, well I'd say, "apply heat."

Since I'm not an expert I would seek out a luthier and ask.

When I was doing the side dots on the guitar I built I sort of misjudged the position of one of them and had to remove it, so I just drilled it out and filled the hole with a mixture of ebony dust and and wood glue. It was a bit frightening though.

Depends on the inlay material, before using heat or a drill try your soldering iron directly on the inlay to loosen it.

Be careful with applications of heat and research the idea first with a reputable knowledge base. Heat can ruin the finish treatment on a maple neck. Rosewood itself is more forgiving of heat, but be careful with the adhesive underneath it.

Actually you need more care with the rosewood board with heat, that is how I remove Fret boards to replace. The best is the heated tip of iron or to drill especially if clay dots.

interesting thread. I know what you mean about the abalone on a maple neck I've seen it and it sure does look purdy

I have Abalone squares on the Ibanez and man do they look good.
So I did a bit of you tubing to see how they did it and it does look easy... Says the plumber who flooded his own house!!
I think I will be buying an old battered Squire and will practice with that first.
Been searching Gumtree all day for a trasher and getting the Dremel ready!

That's the one.

Follow this advice and you'll do fine, mt ed.

cv has this right (no surprise!)

I have also done the following:

Carefully drill into the dot marker and then put in a small screw, (screw it in only like an 8th of an inch,) like a pickguard screw and pull the dot out.(grip it with pliers  )

If it doesn't come out easily, or break and pop out put a drop of acetone in the screw hole, it will either help dissolve the glue, or possibly dissolve/soften the dot depending on what it is made of.
