I decided that I want to change out the PU's in my stelocaster (tele body/strat neck) and would really like to put in two P90's in place of the tele pickups. The only experience I've had with P90's were factory installed on an old Gibson I used town years ago and I can't decide on a brand from the clips I've viewed on Utube as it depends a lot on the amp ect. ect. and unlike a guitar or amp you can't just stroll into your local music shop and try them out. So any advice or opinions would be very much appreciated. Oh yeah they'll be going through a DDRI and/or a SCXD ...thanks in advance

I have an '85 MIJ Fender Esquire that I am considering switching up to a tele with this in the neck:

I have a couple of Iron Gear P90s, 1 in the neck of a tele and one in the neck of an old Kay LP thing.
I love them. They are reasonably cheap but I can't really fault the quality. I don't know about getting them across the pond but I know they have an e-bay store also so shipping might be viable.

I tried IronGear at a time when I was assembling some 'nasties' and decided to buy a load of different pups from them cos they are cheap. After trying their humbuckers and P90s I actually started trying them in 'nice' guitars and was blown away.

I have compared a couple of their hmbuckers to Bare-Knuckles and.......well.......the only thing that gave the Bare-Knuckles the edge that I could find was that pinched harmonics rang out nicer and, tbh, I never use pinched harmonics so went with the Iron Gear......

CHeck them out http://www.irongear.co.uk/index.html

I have also used Catswhiskers and although I havn't used their P90s, I use the tele rails bridge pup and it's one of the nicest I have ever tried!!!!! http://www.catswhiskerpickups.co.uk/index.html

I do have a bit of a 'thing' for searching out small companies that don't charge the earth and comparing them to the designer boutique pups that everyone raves about.......I'll tell you mate....there is not that much difference...not enough to merit the price deifferences anyways....

I Love P-90s.

As for a reasonably priced P-90, I put a Mighty Mite P-90 in the neck position of my Telecaster...amazing! Rich, full and phat without degrading into a puddle of oatmeal. Highly recommend the Mighty Mite.

In my Strat, I put a set of Pete Biltoft Vintage Vibe SP-90 pups...it's a Strat sized P-90. I got all the girth and punch without losing the sparkle and spank of a Stratocaster. Reasonably priced and Pete's a great guy to work with. Highly recommended as well.

Clear, tight and detailed - Lollar
Clear, warm and organic - Antiquties
Splitting the difference - Fralin

All very musical.

I have a set of Tonerider Rebel 90s (humbucker size P90) in a guitar now that I am really happy with. They're nicely balanced with the right amount of top end for my tastes. I haven't used their actual soapbars but if they're anything like these then I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

For something on the more expensive end that I have used are Klein P90s: http://www.kleinpickups.com/c-22-p-90-pickups.aspx . Three different flavors to choose from. I used the Mid-60s version which sounded great but probably a little too much mids for me since I was playing through a tweed twin and not a blackface. I probably should have gone for the 50s version, but these are some that I would highly recommend also.

muchos gracias for the input guys. So far as the sugestions the only type I've had any experience with are the Fralin's that Mike suggested a friend had a pair on one of his guitars they sounded pretty good but I was looking for something a little more crispier. The Mighty Mites are they trebly?

Not in my experience. I have only the one in the neck position of my Tele as a guide, but it's rich, fat and full without getting too bassy or muddy, even with the tone knob turned down a bit (although I usually play with the Fender No-Load Tone Pot all the way open).

A side note, too...they're shielded well and aren't noisy at all, which is the usual knock on P-90's.

+1
Look for them used on ebay.
I had a MIK Tele with Duncan P100s and they were too shrill. I swapped them out for Gibbys. I would urge caution in going any hotter than a standard P90. There are 90s, 95s, and 100s, but the 90 is already a pretty hot pup.
